Liverpool Reportedly Interested in Mohamed Salah

50 million for our little Egyptian? Nah.

By now you’ve no doubt heard the latest transfer rumor to make a mess on Roma’s doorstep—Liverpool, the neglected middle child of the Premiership, is reportedly keen on Mohamed Salah, everyone’s favorite diminutive winger. For Monchi, it represents a litmus test of sorts, in that it marks the first time an English club will (reportedly) attempt to exert their financial might over Roma. So will Monchi yield or tell Liverpool to kindly buzz off?

As far as the particulars are concerned, Football Italia passed along a report via Calciomercato that Liverpool have approached (in some sense of the word) Roma over their 24-year-old Egyptian speed demon, to which Monchi responded (again, reportedly) with a firm €50 million asking price—no quarter given, none taken.

Now, considering how excellent Salah has been for Roma, not to mention the constant off the pitch melodramas we must endure that make days seem like weeks, you may have forgotten what a pain in the ass it was to land Salah in the first place. Not only did Roma have to flirt with two clubs (Fiorentina and Chelsea) to get Salah, they were damn near sued for jumping the gun on Salah’s Chelsea-Fiorentina loan deal (allegedly), a process that was only officially settled last August.

All told, Salah cost Roma a lot of headaches and roughly €22 million in loan and transfer fees, but I’ll tell you what, he’s been worth every penny, or whatever the Euro equivalent may be. This season alone, Salah has accounted for an astounding 17 goals and 12 assists in all comps, including a leading 11 assists in league play. Salah is one of only three players to crack the double-double (goals, assists) in Serie A, joining Napoli’s Jose Callejon and would be Roma player, Atalanta’s Papu Gomez. So while Salah’s game may seem solely predicated on speed, don’t get it twisted—he is an incredibly dynamic player.

So, yeah, Jurgen. Fifty mil is the starting point.
