Social Media Reacts to Totti’s Final Match

Tears dry on their own

I don’t know why I’m always drawn to the social media reaction type of pieces, perhaps it’s just a quick and sometimes entertaining way to gauge popular opinion on a variety of flitting topics, but I have to know what people in every corner of the earth think about that dog getting a yearbook photo, don’t I!?

So let’s take a quick look at how the world reacted to Totti’s final match:

Personally, 2010s Patrick Swayze stand-in Totti was my favorite, how about you?

Hard to believe he’s played as long as he has, and that he debuted at 16 no less. While you were in your room abusing yourself, Totti was out there building a legacy. You should be ashamed.

People were arriving and lining up outside the Olimpico hours before kickoff, and something tells me, they’ll be there hours after the final whistle.

This is pretty amazing. Totti would totally dethrone Cersei....

A salute from one of the many clubs that tried to steal Totti away...

Inter pays their respects as well...

A poem from the future captain, Alessandro Florenzi....

Mr. Right offered his congratulations as well...

While Gervinho took the collage approach...

Even Totti’s occasional Champions League adversary, Sergio Ramos, offered his thanks...

We have a reader on the scene, and he reported some pre-match tears....

This one is a couple days old, but a wonderful sentiment from Samson

I think I’ll miss Whittles unabashed, and in no way unbiased, commentary when Totti enters a match.

Hmm, what was that you were saying about Totti being done? Sure it’s an isolated skill, but it’s a damn important one, especially in the late stages of deadlocked matches. The man still has a role, which is the biggest pity of all of this.

Now for the tears....

This time I need you

This one...fuck, that hurts.

Totti signed a ball saying “Ill miss you” then kicked it into the Curva Sud like a boss.

I’ve been watching sports of all kinds for decades, including many an award tour and retirement ceremony, but I have never...NEVER...seen the fans emote as much as they did this evening. Every tear was a testament to what Francesco Totti meant to Roma fans, while the sight of Totti burying his face in his heads is proof positive that he understood, loved and appreciated the weight of this moment, of those 25 years in service to the people and city he loved.
