It’s another holiday season and more end-of-year fireworks with Radja Nainggolan off the pitch. While the player himself is contracted to Inter Milan, Nainggolan’s still making headlines with Roma.
Some Roma fans will consider the phone conversation leaked over the web today as a gift this Christmas. Radja Nainggolan is overheard getting—it’s unclear where or when but definitely after his move to Inter Milan—some less-than-flattering thoughts off his mind about Inter Milan fans and the city of Milan itself.
It’s hard to see Radja’s career at Inter as anything other than over at this point. That inevitably opens up the question: Will Radja be back in Rome? Radja himself can be overheard making plans to bend Totti’s ear about a return. Yet Inter could easily pursue the option to force him into a move to China or abroad, now that Beppe Marotta is directing affairs at Inter. The Nerazzurri will want the best chance to recoup the money spent on Nainggolan’s transfer (13 million euros cash upfront plus player exchanges with Roma last summer). And then there’s Roma’s interest in this whole thing.
As much as Radja the man himself is loved by many, there aren’t guarantees that Roma - as a club - would want or need Nainggolan back in the side, for reasons both on and off the pitch.
Here is the phone conversation below.
“Mamma mia, I’m making a mess here. I want to come back (inaudible). I’d give anything to be done here. It’s all right, at first I’ve always given everything on the pitch and up until now they’ve kept quiet. And soon enough, if any of those Interisti come to kiss my ass, I swear, I’ll give all of them hell.
Well, I’m good enough friends with Totti, maybe I will push him... but then I’ll have to cause a ruckus to be able to get out of here.”
The gist of it sounds like Nainggolan’s beef hinges on Inter fans not giving him the support he wants from the stands through a difficult injury spell, and that he’s confident he’ll return to form soon to put the injuries behind him.
Would you want Radja Nainggolan back in a Roma shirt?
This incredibly peaceful poll ends on January 31st, last day of the winter transfer window.
