We’ve been previewing the race for next season’s Champions League places in some detail over the past weeks but in the end, Roma were able to secure a place alongside Europe’s big boys without even stepping out onto the pitch. Sassuolo took on Inter Milan in the late kickoff on Saturday night and were able to put a huge dent in the Nerazzurri’s fight for a place in the top 4 by beating them by a narrow 2-1 score line. Goals from Roma youth product Matteo Politano and Eusebio di Francesco’s adopted son, Domenico Berardi, sealed 3 points for Sassuolo and pushed Roma over the line. As a result, the Serie A table now looks as follows with Inter unable to catch Roma with one game to play.

As a thanks to Sassuolo, here’s a look at the two Sassuolo goals that got Roma over the line.

Matteo Politano: 25th minute

Politano has always been a threat from set pieces and scored a lovely free kick under Inter’s wall and past Handanovic who has no chance of stopping that. A great finish from the Roma youth product who will certainly be attracting a number of suitors this summer.

Domenico Berardi: 72nd minute

Holy hell, that is an incredible goal. You can see why EdF was willing to break the bank on Berardi who seemed to take on the entire Inter midfield before unleashing an unstoppable right footed curler past Handanovic.

That’s really all there was to it and Roma can now use the last two games of the season to try out youth players and/or cause a stink to Juventus’ Scudetto party. Enjoy the last two games of the season without pressure and as always, FORZA ROMA!
