We’ve dissected the transfer rumor mill every which way but loose this summer, hitting on everything from the speculative nature of monetary valuations to the very manner in which these rumors get created. While one can analyze the transfer market from a variety of perspectives, the simple point is this: transfer rumors are like a layer of fog, descending on us all while we sleep and making it harder for us to get where we’re going. Every so often that fog is so enveloping we end up driving in circles, passing the same obscured vistas over and over again, searching in vain for the proper exit.
Memphis Depay is that obscured vista. Depay, a 24-year-old Dutch winger, formerly of PSV Eindhoven and Manchester United, has rescued his once flailing career since moving to Lyon in the winter of 2017. In parts of two seasons, Depay has racked up 27 goals and 23 assists in all competitions for The Kids, pushing his name back into the transfer spotlight.
On his future, Depay was quite diplomatic, saying simply that, while he’s happy in Lyon, he, like virtually any other player, would be open to a move to a larger club.
I am very happy at the moment, but obviously I would like to move to a bigger club. We will see when that happens. For the moment I simply want to give 100% from when the season starts. Ask any player, we all want to play in the best clubs and the best leagues. So if a big club comes in and makes an offer, we will discuss it, but I am very happy at Lyon. I am very happy with the quality of our squad and the players
Take note Justin Kluivert, that is how you artfully dodge a question about your future intentions. Depay was purposefully and effectively vague, honest and non-committal in his response, but having had a taste of the limelight with United, one can safely assume he’s chomping at the bit to get back into a bigger club.
With that in mind, here we are once again considering a reality in which Depay plays for Roma. Certainly he would add a layer of explosiveness to Eusebio Di Francesco’s attack, but he wouldn’t come cheap (he’s valued at €45 million), nor would he fulfill EDF’s well known desire for an inverted right winger, plus, you know, he’s kind of a prima donna, which doesn’t always go down well with Roma.
Nevertheless, this rumor persists, to the point where it is believed Roma have leapfrogged AC Milan in the Memphis Depay derby. Given that we’re in the 11th hour of the summer transfer season, with Roma being connected to a swath of players, each of whom come with considerable asterisks attached, it’s starting to look like Monchi is trying to spend that Alisson cash just for the sake of it.
However, if the transfer rumor mill is a thick layer of fog, the Memphis Depay to Roma rumors are more like harmless condensation on the edge of a beer bottle. In this case, a skunky Dutch lager like Grolsch, which just so happens to be my favorite, fyi.
