Could Roma Swap Schick For Cutrone?

New, comments

As much as I want to believe in a Schickaissance, this would be an excellent move.

Since rumors surfaced that Roma might beat Juventus to sign up-and-coming Czech striker Patrik Schick, Chiesa Di Totti has spent a lot of bits and bytes on the forward. His record-breaking transfer showed that Roma wasn’t afraid to push for the hottest prospects in Europe; his middling to poor experience at the Olimpico to date has shown the pitfalls of going all in without an oil-backed owner allowing for €42 million mistakes.

The impending departure of Edin Džeko was seen by many as the moment for Schick to truly prove his worth for i Lupi; no longer would the exciting prospect ride the pine for the world-class and proven Bosnian Diamond. However, recent rumors from Gazzetta Dello Sport suggest that just as Džeko may be headed for greener, Milanese pastures, Schick may also be making his way to the San Siro, albeit for the Rossoneri instead of the Nerazzurri.

One of the key reasons to believe this rumor is Milan’s recent signing of Marco Giampaolo to replace Gennaro Gattuso as manager. Giampaolo was the coach that unlocked Schick at Sampdoria, in a way no other coach has been able to replicate since. When a manager moves to a new club, he often brings along old friends; it stands to reason that Schick wouldn’t mind a chance to re-enter Giampaolo’s tactical fold.

Perhaps the most interest wrinkle for Romanisti in this rumor isn’t concerning Schick’s potential sale, however; instead, it’s about what Roma may be able to get in return for the Czech international. Roma reportedly values Schick at €30 million, and because Milan can’t spend that much on a forward right now (I guess Financial Fair Play has finally become an issue?), Gazzetta posits that Patrick Cutrone may follow in the footsteps of Stephan El Shaarawy and move from Milan to Roma, along with €15 million to reach Roma’s valuation.

Just as the idea of Schick moving to Milan makes sense on a basic level, the dots connect just enough for a Cutrone plus cash to not seem like fantasy football. Despite the recent brouhaha surrounding Roma, Totti, and more, it’s inarguable that Roma has attempted to get more and more Italian over the course of the past few seasons. At the age of 21, Cutrone has positioned himself as one of the forwards of the future for the Azzurri, and his poacher style could work well as a third option in Paulo Fonseca’s wing-heavy tactical style.

This is certainly only the beginning of a rumor, not the end of one, but expect to see Patrik Schick’s name in the rumor mill throughout the summer. As much as I would love for Schick to reach his full potential at Roma, swapping Patrik for Patrick might be the wiser long-term move.
