Given the pace of the transfer rumors over the past few days, it may seem like an eternity ago that we passed along word that Daniele De Rossi, with offers from Boca Juniors and a host of MLS teams on the able, would spurn an adventure abroad to seek opportunities in Serie A, but that story broke less than a week ago. And while it was a difficult pill to swallow, I, for one, pledged not to begrudge his decision. Given the acrimonious divorce between De Rossi and Roma, he had every right to pursue whatever his heart desired.
And despite those rumors, there was still a small part of me that remained in denial; it would just be too weird to see De Rossi wearing the shirt of another Italian club. However, if you believe this rumor, he may have already selected his next shirt:
Schira, a Gazzetta dello Sport journalist, Tweeted that bombshell not more than twenty minute ago, and while there is no substantive story yet, it appears as though De Rossi has said yes to, or is at least open to, playing for Fiorentina next season. Per Schira, the Viola have reportedly offered De Rossi a one-year contract.
With Milan and Bologna reportedly lining up their own offers for Roma's former captain, it seems like De Rossi's familiarity with Fiorentina director Daniele Prade and manager Vincenzo Montella could swing the votes the Viola's way.
Fiorentina aren't getting the rampaging 28-year-old De Rossi who was one of the best midfielders in the world, but they are still getting (if this is true) an extremely intelligent and capable midfielder, one who could still contribute 1,500 or so quality minutes.
I said it in last week's update, but if you're sickened by this move, try and remember who's truly responsible for the site of De Rossi in purple before you accuse him of being a traitor.
