Football is the only sport I can think of where each major team gets a set of three new kits every year. Not that any part of me other than my wallet is complaining; Roma’s kits typically garner a positive response even from completely neutral football fans. Although the lightning bolts in this year’s new home and away kits raised some eyebrows among the more traditionalist set of Romanisti, they’re received similar amounts of acclaim from the greater footballing world.
Well, with the release of Roma’s third kit, it’s apparent that those two kits were merely an appetizer to one of the most gorgeous kits Roma has released in years. Behold:
According to the folks at Nike, “AS Roma’s 2019-20 third kit is a reimagination of a ’90s club classic — complete with dark blue body and a vivid Giallorossi trim, which covers the collar and the cuffing of both sleeves. The jersey’s allover jacquard pattern is made of rows of circles, each containing either the “ASR” typography from the classic Roma crest or the “Lupetto” (wolf’s head), another powerful club symbol. Dark blue shorts and socks, both of which feature Giallorossi detailing and a Nike Futura logo, complete the kit.”
Of course, it wouldn’t be Roma Twitter without a meme-y release video, which I’ve added here for your viewing pleasure:
I’ve had favorite Roma kits in the past; I made the slightly unfortunate mistake of buying the Lupetto Away Kit from 2016/2017 with Mo Salah’s name on the back, but I’ll still wear it around just because that Lupetto logo holds a special place in my heart. This new kit leapfrogs nearly any other Roma kit I own, though; the blue just fits perfectly with the giallo e rossi, and I’m always a fan of kits with collars.
Naturally, the Roma social media guys have extrasensory perception, because they already seem to know what player I’m going to be putting on the back of this kit (once I scrape together the money):
The kit will be on sale starting tomorrow; its first taste of the pitch will happen against İstanbul Başakşehir.
