Roma's first Europa League fixture against Swiss club BSC Young Boys was a lesson in depth, or lack thereof depending on your opinion of Roma's backups. Set in the middle of a three-matches-in-eight-days span, Paulo Fonseca made near whole sale changes to his normal starting eleven in Bern last week, starting the likes of Borja Mayoral, Rick Karsdorp and Pau Lopez.
With so many new faces trying to find their footing on Young Boys’ slick synthetic surface, last week's EL opener likely tested your patience, especially if your name was Paulo Fonseca. With his second unit struggling to mount a cohesive attack, Fonseca reverted to several of his regular starters in the second half to bail out the side in Bern, with Edin Dzeko and Henrikh Mkhitaryan providing assists to Bruno Peres and Marash Kumbulla, respectively.
Will recent history repeat itself? Or can Roma's second unit dispatch of Sofia?
We're about to find out.
