In a year like no other, it was only fitting that we lived through a transfer deadline day like no other. If you avoided manically tracking transfer updates today, good on you, but if you’re anything like me and you watched the transfer tickers from sunrise to sunset, your head is likely spinning. Transfers may have been down league wide—both in terms of players switching clubs and cash changing hands—but Roma fans weren’t the only ones sweating out the deadline, as nearly every major club in Italy scrambled to wrap up their summer shopping season.
For Roma, that meant bidding farewell to a few familiar faces that had either outlived their usefulness to the club or just simply failed to live up to expectations. It also meant trying to conclude a seven-month long negotiation for Chris Smalling with barely 20 minute remaining in the transfer window, and then desperately trying to prove to league officials that all the necessary paperwork was submitted prior to the 20:00 CET deadline.
A day as chaotic as this deserves more discussion, so we assembled the CdT crew to recap Roma’s transfer season: the good, the bad, the ugly and even whether or not Federico Chiesa made a mistake signing with Juventus.
Give it a listen, and as always, feedback is appreciated!
