It’s been a while since I've completely missed a Roma match, but a late week encounter on a foggy night in Romania that coincided with Thanksgiving, even the subdued pandemic sort, was as good an excuse as any. If you were anything like me, you were doubtlessly refreshing Twitter in hopes of match updates, hoping the scoreless results wouldn't last the entire evening.
While Roma were held in check in the first half, Paulo Fonseca's patchwork lineup eventually proved their worth, holding nearly two-thirds of the possession and denying Club an on-target attempt through more than 50 minutes this evening.
Cluj may have won the statistical battle in the attacking end (12 shots to Roma's 7), but the Giallorossi were crisper when it mattered, capitalizing on a set piece in the 49th minute and drawing a penalty shortly after the hour mark to topple their hosts two-nil.
Roma weren't able to win the group this evening, but by dusting off Cluj, Roma now sit on top of Group A with 10 points and have secured passage into the knockout stages, setting up two relatively pressure free matches against BSC Young Boys and CSKA Sofia to round out group play.
So, in case you missed the match entirely, may we present the fog-addled highlights:
