Three goals, three points, third place. Not a bad way to end 2020 at all, right? While we wouldn't have called this a must-win match for Roma, ending the calendar year with two consecutive defeats could have sent the club spiraling into the new year. After rushing out to an early lead thanks to an 11th minute Jordan Veretout goal, Roma held Cagliari in check for the next 40 to 50 minutes but left the visitors a bit too much space as the game crawled towards the hour mark.
And, as is seemingly always the case, the wheels very nearly came off early in the second half. Thanks to a flurry of chances from Giovanni Simeone and a 59th-minute goal from Joao Pedro, Cagliari gave Roma all they could handle in the middle portions of this match.
But, thanks to some impressive counter-attacking play and a pair of brilliant assists from Rick Karsdorp and Chris Smalling, Roma did just enough to weather the storm and bag all three points this evening.
