Late last week, we cautioned not to read too much into the level of Roma's recent opponents. After dropping three straight matches, toppling Parma and Brescia (the league's 12th and 19th placed sides, respectively) wasn't exactly on par with the 1980 Miracle on Ice, but Roma showed steady progress while finding their new tactical footing. They just needed to win and look organized and confident while doing so, which they did, particularly against Brescia.
But today was the toughest test for this new look Roma. By reaching ninth place, Verona aren't exactly the typical newly promoted side. Under Ivan Juric's guidance, the Mastiffs have become a tenacious and well balanced team, which was certainly on display this evening, even if Juric was forced to watch from the stands after getting a red card early in the first half.
Roma may have lost the statistical battle to Hellas Verona tonight (as crazy as that might sound) but thanks to the tireless efforts of Jordan Veretout, Henrikh Mkhitaryan and Roger Ibañez, among others, the Giallorossi scratched and clawed their way to their third consecutive victory, setting the stage for another difficult task this weekend: Antonio Conte's Inter Milan.
So, in case you missed today's victory, enjoy another look at those glorious blue kits:
