We don't normally discuss transfer rumors the morning of a matchday, to say nothing of a derby, but this one is too juicy to ignore. By now you're all well aware of the rift between Atalanta mastermind Gian Piero Gasperini and star playmaker Alejandro “Papu” Gomez, one that seemingly appeared out of thin air but has nonetheless caused the 32-year-old Argentine to become ostracized in Bergamo. In a year of Serie A surprises, this melodrama is perhaps the story of the season.
Due to this fracture, Gomez, who has accounted for 47 goals and 53 assists in all competitions since the 2016-2017 season, has not played since Atalanta's draw with Juventus in mid-December. Despite that absence, Gomez has four goals and two assists in 10 appearances in 2020-2021.
With word of this divorce spreading throughout the league, the usual sharks started circling in the waters, particularly Antonio Conte and Inter Milan. However, according to Calciomercato, new Roma GM Tiago Pinto may make a move for Gomez as soon as tomorrow morning:
While the two clubs may ultimately discuss other matters, CM reports that Pinto has a meeting set with his Atalanta counterparts tomorrow to discuss a possible transfer of the €15 million-rated Gomez. With Inter's ownership currently fielding offers for some, part, or all of the team, Roma may actually have a leg up on their bitter rivals for Gomez's signature.
Papu may not fit an area of immediate need, but when a player this talented becomes available, you at least have to kick the tires. Landing Gomez could be quite a statement signing for Roma's new GM.
