The always tricky task of defeating Juventus on the road seemed suddenly plausible as the Giallorossi took to the pitch at the Allianz Stadium today. Although the margins were slim (and Juve had a match in hand), Roma entered this match ahead of Juve on the table and with a more prolific offense through 20 rounds of play. And what's more, Roma seemed to have moved past their nightmare doubleheader against Spezia, following up their last-second win with a bit of sweet revenge against Hellas Verona last week.
And in the early phases of tonight's match, Roma had all the right ideas. Dominating possession and whipping the ball around as they pleased, Paulo Fonseca's crew looked like they were ready to take the match to Juventus, seizing the initiative in the opening moments of the match.
But, as is so often the case, Roma's opponents made them pay for even the slightest mistake as Cristiano Ronaldo fired a sweet left-footed shot past a helpless Pau Lopez in the 13th minute, a sequence made possible by some errant switches of play and some less than enthusiastic defending from Bryan Cristante on Alex Sandro, whose hockey-assist set up Ronaldo's goal.
The Old Lady forced an own goal midway through the second half, and that was that. So, for posterity's sake, have a gander at the highlights and dream of a day when Roma can match the likes of Matthijs de Ligt, Federico Bernardeschi, and Deja Kulusevski coming off the bench.
