With 14 goals, two extra-time matches, and a penalty shootout for the ages, day three of the Round of 16 embodied everything we love about international football, where the knockout stages produce unexpected moments in spades. From Croatia's epic almost comeback in stoppage time to Kylian Mbappe being stonewalled by Jan Sommer in the final round of PKs, yesterday's action was practically torn from a Hollywood script.
Needless to say, Monday's matches set an almost impossible standard for the final day of the Round of 16. While it remains to be seen if today's fixtures can match yesterday's drama, starting the day off with one of the truly great rivalries in global football is a hell of a way to start.
