As the dog days of summer approach, Roma’s mercato has finally begun to take shape. Tiago Pinto has been able to unload some excess contracts in the form of Cengiz Ünder, Pau Lopez, and Justin Kluivert. Meanwhile, work still remains to be done with Steven Nzonzi, Pedro, Robin Olsen, and Javier Pastore among others still on the books. We all knew Roma would have to sell in order to buy this summer and with some of the aforementioned names off the books Tiago Pinto has been able to do just that.
Rui Patricio was brought in to try and alleviate the ills of Olsen and Lopez at the goalkeeper position. Meanwhile, Matias Viña has arrived to replace the injured Leonardo Spinazzola (official announcement coming after his mandatory quarantine). And just yesterday, a surprise name emerged in the form of Eldor Shomurodov of Genoa as another forward to supplement Edin Dzeko and Borja Mayoral. That one came out of left field and when coupled with what we expect to be imminent Xhaka signing, it left Sean scratching his head a bit.
So, with that, we took a deeper look at Pinto’s team-building strategy thus far to see if it puts him on track to be Monchi 2.0.
