The Derby Del Sole is always a momentous occasion. Sure, it’s not the Derby Della Capitale, and the 2010s were usually highlighted more by Roma jousting with Juventus than Napoli, but as the traditional Southern Italian powerhouses, the matches between the Partenopei and the Giallorossi pack a punch. For Luciano Spalletti’s men, the Scudetto is theirs to lose; they’re ten points ahead of second-place Inter even before today’s match is played, and try as José Mourinho might, his pre-match comments congratulating Napoli on winning the title will probably not result in one of the most spectacular collapses in footballing history.
Even so, the Giallorossi come into this match riding relatively high; the gap between second and sixth place is practically nonexistent, and a win in Naples would give Roma sole ownership over second place. Minus the Nicolò Zaniolo drama that has rent my soul, 2023 has been kind to the Giallorossi. Today’s lineup hopes to continue harnessing the positive results Roma has seen from the Tammy Abraham - Paulo Dybala pairing, this time with Lorenzo Pellegrini sitting directly behind them.
