Probable Formations: Bologna vs AS Roma

Once again, Roma is ravaged by injuries and suspensions, so how will they line up without her two biggest attacking threats? One thing is for sure: they'll need a top performance from Lorenzo Pellegrini.

Just when it looked like Roma was finally starting to get healthy, the muscular injuries started to pile up again. After losing Paulo Dybala for a crucial stretch of upcoming matches, we learned that Houssem Aouar will also be out for some time. The French midfielder was injured in Europa League action on Thursday and will reportedly miss considerable time. Additionally, Sadar Azmoun, who replaced Dybala on Sunday, was also injured in that match—although he did travel to Bologna with the squad.

In addition to those two missing the foreseeable future, José Mourinho reported at Wednesday’s pre-match press conference that Gianluca Mancini is gritting through an issue of his own.

“Mancini has a serious physical issue but he will play through it. He’s a different type of player compared to someone else who at the slightest pain in his pinky refuses to play because it hurts. Mancini isn’t like that.”

Mourinho praised his vice-captain’s toughness while also throwing a veiled barb at a certain other center back who remains unavailable. Further complicating things in Bologna is the fact that both Romelu Lukaku and Nicola Zalewski are suspended for this one after being red-carded in last weekend’s draw against Fiorentina.

With both Lukaku and Dybala out, it’s expected that Stephan El Shaarawy and Andrea Belotti will be tasked with breaking down a tough Bologna defense. Meanwhile, after having to improvise along the backline with Diego Llorente as the lone natural center-back against Sheriff, Roma will have Mancini and Evan Ndicka back to pair with the Spaniard.

The center of the park is expected to be comprised of Bryan Cristante, Leandro Paredes, and Lorenzo Pellegrini. Lastly, Leo Spinazzola and Rasmus Kristensen are scheduled to start on the wings, with Rui Patricio returning to the net.

Probable Formations

ROMA (3-5-2): Patricio; Ndickia, Llorente, Mancini; Spinazzola, Cristante, Paredes, Pellegrini, Kristensen; El Shaarawy, Belotti.
