Probable Formations: Milan vs Roma

The Giallorossi will be down Dybala yet again. How will Mourinho cope without his talisman? Here's our best guess.

“Dybala is a special player who in recent years has played in a team with other special players. At Roma we don’t have another player like him.”

Those were the words of Jose Mourinho during his pre-match press conference ahead of Sunday’s trip to the San Siro. Unfortunately, Dybala’s name was brought up because the Argentine talisman was forced off at halftime of Wednesday’s Coppa Italia derby loss to Lazio. And according to Mourinho, he won’t be available for the big match against third-place Milan.

“Llorente and Dybala? Llorente can play tomorrow, but he is doubtful. I don’t think Dybala will make it. Finding the solution to play without Dybala is not the same as for Guardiola when Haaland is not there,” Mourinho said. “It won’t be the same team as the derby against Milan. There will be no Dybala.”

In addition to Dybala, center-back Diego Llorente is also a doubt, even though it seems that he at least will be available. That's two key cogs of Mourinho’s side potentially unavailable in a match that could carry a lot of weight for the rest of Roma’s season and the future of Mourinho at the club—if reports are to be believed.

How will Mourinho set up to try and deal without Dybala? It will likely come down to either Stephan El Shaarawy or Andrea Belotti to partner Romelu Lukaku. Currently, most major publications in Italy are suggesting that Belotti has the edge in a dual-striker look.

Meanwhile, despite Mourinho’s words about Llorente being a doubt to start, most believe he will given Roma’s limited options along the back. That would make for a back three featuring two players battling through physical ailments (Llorente and Gianluca Mancini) and a teenager (Dean Huijsen).

As long as that trio can give it a go in defense, then Bryan Cristante can resume his usual role in the midfield. Slated to play alongside him are Leandro Paredes and Edoardo Bove in what has become the go-to midfield. That would mean captain Lorenzo Pellegrini again gets pushed to the bench.

Lastly, the position that has been under the most scrutiny of late has been the wingback position, where the Giallorossi have not been getting much production. And Mourinho pointed it out after the derby loss.

“There is a problem right now and it’s been there for a long time,” Mourinho said in his post-match presser. “We are very good at putting our wing-backs in dangerous positions but they don’t create anything for us.”

“It’s already happened in the past, even against Atalanta, we are creating a lot, the team controls the match, then the ball reaches one of our wingers and nothing comes of it, no cross to the near post, nothing, they seem blocked and it’s frustrating to watch.”

Mourinho's intention was to motivate the group of players, which includes Zalewski, Spinazzola, Karsdrop, Kristensen, and Celik, with his words. And it looks like Zalewski and Kristensen will be selected to play against Milan.
