While it may have only happened by the slimmest of margins, the Giallorossi did gift new manager Daniele De Rossi a win in his first match as Roma’s head coach. Goals from Lorenzo Pellegrini and Romelu Lukaku were the difference makers today, and while Roma’s wingback play was yet again disappointing, the decision to play Stephan El Shaarawy and Paulo Dybala behind Romelu Lukaku from minute one proved fruitful. You have to wonder if Nicola Zalewski will slowly but surely be transformed into Dybala’s partner behind Lukaku over time, as although SES showed promise as a starter today, he’s certainly not the long term solution Zalewski could be up front.
The highlights from this match are encouraging, to say the least, for a side that looked helpless in recent weeks. It remains to be seen whether or not Roma can return to getting wins against bigger sides, but baby steps are clearly necessary following José Mourinho’s sudden sacking.
