Di Marzio: Real’s Vazquez an Option for Roma

Another intriguing name with an ill fit for Roma.

With Roma and Leicester engaged in the world’s longest tango, tip toeing around the future of Riyad Mahrez, we’re all left watching from the sidelines, desperately waiting for the dance to end, or at least someone to wrench an ankle and take a breather. With tens of millions and some 48 hours in the way of Thursday’s rumored medical examination, Monchi and his staff continue to compile a list of alternatives to Mahrez.

And if you’ve been with us all summer, you no doubt know the names. From Lucas Moura to Hatem Ben Arfa to Suso to most recently Juan Cuadrado, we’ve been privy to nearly every right winger on the planet. And, well, here’s one more:

As you can see this rumor is courtesy of Gianluca Di Marzio, who lists the 26-year-old Vazquez as Monchi’s latest plan B. Vazquez, an attacking midfielder/right winger, is every bit the playmaker, doling out seven assists in only 1,300 minutes of La Liga action last season. While he is pretty low on the Madrid marquee, Vazquez has put together a nice little career at the Bernabeu so far, compiling eight goals and 14 assists in all competitions across two seasons.

As you can see from that clip, he is incredibly talented, but....while Vazquez made a handful of appearances at forward, he’s not really a winger, and he’s definitely not the inverted right winger to which we’ve been alluding all summer, so the fit isn’t as seamless as Di Marzio may make it seem, talented though he might be.
