Roma didn’t escape this one without committing a few sins, even though the good deeds outweighed the bad.

It was a hard fought win for the Giallorossi at the Bentegodi on Sunday— one that didn’t look secure until stoppage time. However, in the end, Roma was able to peg the league’s top defensive side three times en route to a 3-1 victory. It was a much needed win for the Giallorossi as Fonseca’s men moved provisionally into fourth. Just because it was a win doesn’t mean that everything was peaches and cream on a rainy evening in Verona, so let’s take a look the sinners and saints from this one.

The Sinners

Mancini’s Yellow Card

Normally, a yellow card that doesn’t lead to an eventual red card or directly to an opponent’s goal is a non-factor once the match ends. However, that isn’t the case with the yellow Gianluca Mancini was shown at the hour-mark by Marco Guida. Unfortunately for Mancini and Roma, this yellow means a one-match suspension due to yellow card accumulation and it couldn’t have come at a worse time. Mancini will miss out on Friday’s match against top of the table Inter.

It’s a big blow for Roma considering how well the Italian has partnered Chris Smalling. And it brings Fonseca’s decision to start and continue playing Mancini for the full 90 minutes knowing Inter was looming into question. The CT said in the pre-match presser that Mancini would play when many others debated whether he should be held out for this very reason. Fonseca gambled a bit and lost. Roma will now hope that Federico Fazio is up to snuff against Inter and this yellow doesn’t have more grave implications come Friday.

Roma’s Back Post Defending

Roma’s defense hasn't come under criticism of late, but the Giallorossi’s nonchalant defending at the back post nearly cost them in this match. Verona’s Davide Faraoni caught Roma’s back line (particularly Aleskandar Kolarov) ball watching when he leveled that match in the 21st minute. That wouldn’t be the last time that Verona caught the Giallorossi failing to defend the back past. Luckily for Roma, Verona wasn’t onside in the other instances.

The Saints

Lorenzo Pellegrini

What more can be said about Lorenzo Pellegrini? When he plays, Roma is more dangerous in attack. The young Roma delivered yet another remarkable assist today to set up Justin Kluivert’s opening goal. This time Pellegrini was falling down as he delivered a ball with his weaker left-foot to put Kluivert in on a goal. If this was hockey, Pellegrini also would’ve received the second assist on Henrikh Mkhitaryan’s game-sealing goal. Fonseca has found his trequartista.

Diego Perotti

The veteran Argentina has been mostly a non-factor this season for Roma, but not today. Perotti was thrust into action in the 34th minute when Kluivert went down injured. Perotti gave Roma the lead back right before halftime from the spot and later would assist Mkhitaryan’s stoppage time goal. Fonseca will hope that this version of Perotti is the one he gets when calls upon the Argentine the rest of the season.

The Assistant Referee’s Flag

As we mentioned earlier in our sinner’s section, Verona almost leveled the score with Roma a handful of times. The Mastiff’s were even awarded a penalty for a handball by Chris Smalling. Luckily for Roma, a Verona goal and the penalty were both negated thanks to the home side being offside. The assistant referee’s flag (and VAR) bailed Roma out on more than one occasion in this one. Thank goodness, otherwise we may not be celebrating a Roma victory.

Roma did enough to win on a soggy Verona evening.

In the buildup to this match, most of the discussion, both here and within the club itself, seemed to center on improving Roma's organization and execution in the final third. By honing up these facets of his attack, Paulo Fonseca hoped to leave a more dominant Roma in its wake—a squad that would not only win, but win flawlessly.

And, well, that didn't happen. Roma did create two beautifully orchestrated team goals—spurred by Lorenzo Pellegrini in each instance—but were otherwise frustrated by Verona, who actually held more possession than Roma on the day.

Still, the mark of a truly great team is the ability to win ugly. And while that notion might send shivers down Fonseca's spine, today Roma proved they could win without playing their absolute best.

And hey, Roma still scored three goals against a side that had conceded 11 in their previous 13 matches.

Goals from Kluivert, Perotti and Mkhitaryan won the day at a rainy Bentegodi.

With back to back three-nil wins in the books and a manager looking for even greater gains, Roma greeted the rainy Verona evening with a greater sense of purpose—dominance. Now that they've shed their injury woes and have nearly a full squad at their disposal, Roma seemed ready to impose their on weaker opponents. We've seen different fragments of the dominant Roma at various points throughout the season, but they've seldom put together a complete and thoroughly dominant 90 minutes this season, so it's not surprising that Fonseca is yearning for more.

Of course, putting in a lopsided and entertaining performance is exceedingly difficult on a rainy pitch, even more so when you're squaring off against one of the league's sternest defenses. With only 11 goals conceded through 13 matches, Verona's back line has been virtually impenetrable, and while there are a few flaws in their armor (they concede nearly 18 shots per match), if nothing else, they can batten down the hatches when needed. And when you throw the soggy pitch into the equation, Verona seemed well equipped to slow down and frustrate the Roma attack.

And through much of the first half, that's precisely what they did. Roma attempted to combat Verona's stout defense by using the speed of Justin Kluivert and Cengiz Ünder on the wings to their advantage, but the Mastiffs defense did an admirable job cutting off any passing/crossing lanes Roma's wingers hoped to exploit.

It was a frustrating start to the match for Roma, as the weather and Verona's defense seemed to conspire to against the Giallorossi, but Roma found a breakthrough in the 17th minute when Lorenzo Pellegrini delivered a sensational assist (from midfield with his weaker leg while falling over...amazing) to Justin Kluivert, springing the young Dutchman down the left flank. Kluivert's attempt on goal was equally impressive, as he delivered a tight-angled shot towards the far post, giving Roma an early lead.

That lead wouldn't last long, though. Verona would strike back four minutes later, as Marco Faraoni got on the end of a looping out-swinging cross to beat Pau Lopez. Full marks to Verona for this play, but multiple Roma defenders (particularly Aleksandar Kolarov) were caught ball watching, leaving Faraoni WIDE OPEN on the back post. It was about as easy a goal as you'll likely see.

Verona would peg Roma back twice more, but had goals disallowed due to offside calls. Roma, undaunted by their complacency, would strike back when Cengiz Ünder caught Edin Dzeko streaking into the area, drawing a penalty in the process. Diego Perotti, who had come on midway through the half for an injured Kluivert, converted the penalty with his signature nonchalant approach.

The song remained the same in the second half, as Verona's attempts to level the match were scrubbed out by the official, while Roma were simply content to play out the string for the final 20 minutes of the match, putting it officially out of reach when Henrikh Mkhitaryan scored in the 92nd minute.

Random Thoughts & Observations

I can't speak for anyone else, but I really love the white top/red shorts look on the away kits.

Verona had three, count ‘em three, goals disallowed via offside calls in this match. They were correctly judged in the end, but on each of those occasions, Roma's defense was exposed and exploited rather easily. They have a deadly penchant to ignore the far post, and today it nearly bit them cost them three points.

Going along with that: Roma's defense is as shallow as their midfield is deep. At this point, they're pretty much riding the same three guys 90 minutes week in and week out (Smalling, Mancini and Kolarov), while rotating through three options at right back (Florenzi, Spinazzola and Santon), none of whom are ideal and/or healthy enough to contribute.

Of course, now that we've said that, Gianluca Mancini will miss next week's match against the now first place Inter Milan. He came into the match with a yellow, and with that huge fixture looming, it is right to question why he played the full 90 minutes.

Verona nearly had another one in stoppage time but Giampaolo Pazzini flubbed a gimme right on the goal line, though he was deemed offside anyway. Once again, this would-be goal was correctly ruled offside by the official, but Verona was able to find cracks in the Roma defense with shocking ease.

These didn't stem from naked athleticism either. With a few simple passes and exemplary spacing/positioning, Verona was able to create clear cut chances in the six-yard box on at least four occasions today.

Roma eventually rendered those concerns moot when Henrikh Mkhitaryan scored an insurance goal, sealing up the 3-1 victory.

While he didn't directly set up that last goal, Lorenzo Pellegrini had a whale of a match, dishing out his fourth assist in three matches since returning from a foot injury. It almost seems insane he was played in the double pivot earlier this season because about as natural a trequartista as you'll see in today's game.

Final Thoughts

This wasn't exactly the dominating performance Paulo Fonseca called for earlier this week, but even with less than 50% possession, Roma still managed to double Verona's shot attempts (8 to 4) while putting five of those on target and scoring two from the run of play. Roma were lucky that Verona were caught offside three times in the penalty area, but aside from that the only real blemish was the late card to Mancini—he should have been pulled off by then and will now miss a critical match against Inter Milan.

Up Next

Verona are tough to crack, but Roma's focus on direct play could win the day.

Leave it to Paulo Fonseca, a man most of us would call a perfectionist, to seek a dominant performance fresh off two straight three-nil victories. Maybe it's some latent frustration from Roma's 2-0 defeat at the hands of lowly Parma, but speaking ahead of tomorrow's match against eighth place Verona, Fonseca didn't mince words, saying he wants Roma to “dominate opponents.” While it may sound odd in the wake of Roma's recent turnaround, these comments are in line with Fonseca's overall ethos; winning isn't enough, you have to win the right way, with execution and precision.

And quite frankly, that's what you want from your manager, right? The season is a marathon not a sprint, so having hands that aren't easily impressed at the wheel is better for the long-term product on the pitch.

Hellas Verona vs. Roma: December 1st. 20:45 CET/2:45 EST. Stadio Bentegodi, Verona

At this particular mile marker Roma will encounter Hellas Verona, the league's second stingiest defense. Through 13 matches, Verona has conceded only 11 goals, a mark bested by only Juventus, but when you dig a bit deeper, the waters get muddier. Verona may not be conceding goals, but they're bleeding shots at an alarming rate; their 17.8 shots conceded per match is the second worst mark in the league, trailing only Lecce. Making matters worse (for them), they're taking only 11.3 shots per match themselves—so there's a bit of an imbalance, to say the least.

Verona may have benefited from a bit of shot-providence but their record in one-goal matches is the very definition of fair: four wins and four losses. Still, throw these facts and figures together and Verona defensive record looks a bit unsustainable. They're on the losing end of the shot equation and they've been involved in the third-most one-goal matches, winning and losing them in equal measure.

Something just doesn't add up, and indeed even the advanced stats bear this out—Verona are out performing their expected goals allowed by 7.7. In other words, they've conceded seven fewer goals than the metrics would otherwise suggest.

Still, the results are the results and Verona have been awfully tough to break down in the final third, a point not lost on Fonseca:

Istanbul is in the past and we have to focus on nothing but Verona now. It will be a difficult match against a very good team who are aggressive in defence and quick on the counter. They have the league’s second-best defence too, which is something we must bear in mind. It’s going to be tough

On his specific approach to unlocking Verona's man-marking:

It’s something we worked on in training today but I’m not going to discuss it here or Verona will know everything about us. In any case, we’ve prepared to face teams who man-mark.

I'm not enough of a tactician to infer exactly how Fonseca will counteract Verona's defensive rigidity, but his comments in an unrelated question do give us an idea of his broad strokes approach:

We’re quite solid defensively but I’d like to see us dominating opponents more. That’s not easy in Italy. If you look at the possession percentages, there’s not much difference between the two teams. I’d like us to keep the ball more and spend more time in the final third. We must improve our organised attacks.

Based on those comments alone, it sounds like Fonseca is stressing the importance of remaining committed to their approach; not abandoning their tactical approach the minute they become frustrated; to remain, as he says, organized.

To get an understanding of what he means, we needn't look any further than Thursday's match in Istanbul. The majority of Roma's chances and goals were the end result of proper spacing and quick passing, particularly Justin Kluivert's goal, which was a picture perfect counter attacking goal torn straight from the pages of any coaching manual; quick, succinct passes and movements capped off by a simple and direct shot from Kluivert. No wasted movements, no indecision, just a beautiful team movement that advanced nearly the full length of the pitch in only three moves.

That's Roma at her best, and in some ways that's football at its best. So if this is Fonseca's approach against Verona—focusing on spacing and vertical attacking play—you have to like their chances tomorrow afternoon.

Things really seem to be coming together for Roma at the moment, so the challenge for Fonseca will be maintaining his squad's focus and reintegrating some of his returning pieces.

Roma have the talent advantage in this matchup, and if their organization, patience and commitment to the cause are on point, three points should follow soon after.

Just a couple of changes are expected from Thursday’s side.

After winning back-to-back matches 3-0, things are looking up for Roma, doubly so now that many of the injured players are back to full training. With the club’s recent success and a healthier roster, Paulo Fonseca will have to try and incorporate some turnover without losing the continuity that the team has found in recent weeks. With that in mind, the Roma CT isn’t expect to rotate too much on Sunday at Hellas Verona.

As Roma travel north, the Giallorossi will certainly be without long-term absentees Davide Zappacosta and Bryan Cristante, as well as reserve keeper Antonio Mirante. Meanwhile, the status of both Alessandro Florenzi and Javier Pastore are up in the air heading into the weekend— Florenzi is available, Pastore is not. Also out for this one will be Nicolò Zaniolo due to yellow card suspension.

With Pastore out and Henrikh Mkitaryan and Nikola Kalinic still working their way back to full fitness, don’t expect too many changes from Thursday’s side in Istanbul. One of the two changes is expected to be at right back where Leonardo Spinazzola should step in for Davide Santon. Although Fonseca left it wide open in regards to who will start there.

“At right-back I have three options: Spinazzola and Santon played on Thursday, but Florenzi did well against Brescia too.”-Fonseca

The rest of the defense in front of Pau Lopez will again consist of Gianluca Mancini, Chris Smalling, and Aleksandar Kolarov.

Moving into the midfield, Jordan Veretout and Amadou Diawara will again form the double pivot. Another of Roma’s two anticipated changes will be in the attack. With Zaniolo suspended, Cengiz Ünder is expected to start at right wing with Justin Kluivert on the opposite flank. Rounding out the XI will be Lorenzo Pellegrini in the hole behind Edin Dzeko.
