It's been awhile since we've seen Roma play this poorly.

With a seven match unbeaten streak under their belts, Roma ended 2019 on a high note, climbing all the way back to fourth place in Serie A, even putting a bit of space in between themselves and fifth place Atalanta. What's more, Roma have really been on a run all season long, having only lost three matches in all competitions. It's a streak we would have screamed for in nearly any other year, so let's try and keep some perspective in the wake of yesterday's putrid display against Torino.

There’s really no way to take the stink off this loss, but considering all that preceded it, I’ll encourage you not to throw the baby out with the bath water; Roma are heading in the right direction.

Having said that...Roma were atrocious in their first match of 2020. With 31 shots attempted and only seven on target, Roma put a new spin on the word wasteful. The attempts were there in spades, but as the match wore on Roma seemed to simply settle for any available shot, and, well, you saw what happened.

Despite the loss to Torino, Roma remain in fourth place, though their grasp on that position has grown more tenuous. A win could have potentially put seven points between Roma and fifth place Atalanta, but with nothing to show for yesterday's efforts, Roma's lead could potentially shrink to one point.

Now that we've got all that out of the way, let's take a look at the highs and lows from this one. And as a reminder, statistics to play a larger role in these, so despite Roma's poor showing yesterday, there were still a few standouts.

The Sinners

Paulo Fonseca

For the first time Roma's magnificent manager makes our list of sinners. Yes, his team couldn’t hit the broadside of a barn yesterday, and while I wouldn't dare say he was out coached, his failure to make any real tweaks in the flow of the match didn't help matters any. While the first change he did make, removing Diego Perotti in the 72nd minute, did little to change the flow of attack and stripped the club of perhaps its most effective player to that point.

However, to his eternal credit, Fonseca recognized and copped to his club's difficulties in the match:

There were difficulties in the first phase of build-up, with Amadou Diawara and Jordan Veretout – that’s true. However in the first seven minutes of the game alone we managed to create several opportunities

we had a hard time down the right channel. Torino always had three players in that area of the pitch, which caused us problems, particularly in the first period.

He didn't really elaborate, so we can only guess what he told the club throughout the match, but Roma didn't really pass the eye test yesterday: they were sluggish and too one-dimensional for large swaths of the match and didn't really seem to correct the issue as the match wore on.

Some of that has to fall on the manager, no matter how poor the shots were.

Edin Dzeko

In some ways, Dzeko finds himself in a unique position regarding the relative distribution of criticism and praise. As the club's only legit forward, he earns heaps of praise when Roma plays well (even if he's not actually scoring) and when things are going bad, he's just as likely to receive undue blame.

But...uh...he was not good yesterday. In 90 minutes, Dzeko put only one of his five attempts on target and completed only 64% of his passes while committing several turnovers and/or unforced errors. And then there was that moment in the first half where he was done in by a patch of grass on what otherwise seemed like a decent chance at beating Sirigu.

Dzeko has had worse matches in a Roma shirt, but this was another shining example of how much this club relies on him...for better or worse.

Roma were a bit letdown by their back-line as well (neither Smalling nor Mancini were at their best) but let's try and dig out some positives from this one.

The Saints

Photo by Quality Sport Images/Getty Images

Lorenzo Pellegrini

I was pretty shocked by these numbers as well, but in 90 minutes Pellegrini dished out seven key passes, hit on two of four long balls, played six accurate crosses, drew three fouls and ripped off eight shots, though only two were on target.

Roma were pretty wasteful in attack, but were it not for Pellegrini, they wouldn't have had as much to waste...if that makes sense. Pellegrini's development as a passer and play-maker this season has been a joy to watch, and he even pulled off a Totti-esque backheel yesterday, one that Zaniolo very nearly turned into a goal.

We don't know what the future holds for Alessandro Florenzi, but Pellegrini has what it takes (and more) to be the Roman standard bearer for many years to come.

Pau Lopez

Lopez can't really be blamed for either goal yesterday—Belotti could attempt that shot 100 more times and never make it—but he flashed his impressive positioning and reflexes several times throughout the match, and was superb with the ball at his feet, hitting on eight of twelve long balls while completing nearly 86% of his passes.

Pau was a bit slow to start the season, but he's really been showing the goods over the past couple of months. Agility, reflexes, intelligence and distribution—he's got them all. He's the Real McCoy.

Diego Perotti

Based on his 72 minutes of action yesterday, it sure seems like we're headed for another Perotti upswing. The 31-year-old Argentine is a notoriously hot and cold player, but when he's on form, he's arguably Roma's most skilled player with the ball at his feet.

In those 72 minutes, Perotti completed 94% of his passes, handed out four key passes, dribbled past four defenders, drew three fouls and hit on three of three long balls.

He was far and away Roma's most dangerous player yesterday, but made way for Kalinic (for some reason) midway through the second half. With Cengiz Ünder relegated to the bench and Justin Kluivert injured, Roma will need every bit of Perotti early in 2020.

Until next time!

Not a great start to the new year for Paulo Fonseca's men, who were frustrated in equal parts by their opponents and the referee.

Roma kicked off 2020 with a relatively easy fixture against 11th place Torino, a side that was all over the map in their prior handful of matches. With victories against Brescia, Genoa and Fiorentina offset by losses to SPAL and Inter, Torino weren't exactly entering Round 18 calm and collected. But, as is so often the case, fixtures against struggling sides can quickly turn into 90 minutes of frustration for the supposed superior club.

With both sides knocking off two-weeks worth of rust, there was bound to be a lack of fluidity in this match. No matter how hard they went in training, this was the first taste of real football in weeks, so the transition back to actual football was bound to be awkward.

The pity for Roma is that when you're the side that thrives on synchronicity and dynamism, that dis-fluency inflicts greater damage on your final product. That damage is doubled when your opponent doesn't even bother to play football. Torino's clutching, grabbing, and Rinconing made Roma's misery worse.

Despite all that, Roma had no problem winning and maintaining possession throughout the match, but they struggled to make much of anything with the ball. With Torino effectively removing Edin Dzeko from the match, Roma had no other choice but to work the wings and play the overlap, very often pumping in haphazard crosses into the well-marked Dzeko.

And so it went. With Lorenzo Pellegrini, Nicolo Zaniolo and later Henrikh Mkhitaryan unable to work give and goes in the center of the area or check the ball back to the center, they were essentially a one trick pony. And even though they won the corner kick battle by a wide margin, their usual luck on setpieces just wasn't there this evening.

I don't want to sell Torino short, though. One simply cannot say enough about their defensive effort tonight; they completely and utterly removed Dzeko from this match. In 90 minutes, Dzeko didn't put a single attempt on goal and was on an island for nearly the entire match, functioning as neither the finisher or facilitator.

If you've watched Roma for any decent amount of time, you're probably familiar with this equation:

Missed chances + Compact and efficient defense = Disaster.

We can augment that equation with pitch conditions and referee indiscretion, but honestly I'm not sure if that's a variable or a constant.

There are many unknowns in our elegant universe, but eventually math always wins out, and tonight was no exception.

The inevitable disaster did happen at the end of the first half. After Jordan Veretout was booked in the 45th minute, referee Marco Di Bello added one additional minute to the half. Following a poor Alessandro Florenzi cross at roughly 46:20, Andrea Belotti scored an incredible goal, “shaking off” three Roma defenders, who inexplicably allowed him space in the first place, beating Pau Lopez by mere centimeters.

Roma really weren't able to alter their fortunes in the second half either—even after switching to an attacking 4-4-2—and weren't able to capitalize on the few genuine chances they created, including one span in which they had three attempts within the six yard box but failed to make Sirigu sweat.

And that was really all she wrote. It was a classic Roma Happens match with a classic Roma Happens finish.

Up Next

Roma faces the other team from Torino next Sunday when they face Juventus at home.

Can Roma continue to push Lazio for third place with a victory against Toro?

Nothing lasts forever, whether it’s my three-week Christmas vacation from graduate school, the heaps of Crostoli di Natale I made with my dad, or Roma’s very own winter break. I’ve got disparate levels of appreciation and disappointment about each of those things coming to an end (going from petting dogs to studying public policy is going to be an abrupt shift back to reality), but on the bright side, Sunday afternoons will once again be filled with trying to get ESPN+ to work on my apartment’s TV.

As the Giallorossi entered the winter break, they were on a tear of good form: four wins in the last five league matches, qualification for the knockout stages of the Europa League secured, and one really great New Years’ speech from Paulo Fonseca. That good form has pushed them into contention for third place with suburban rivals Lazio, who face eighteenth-place Brescia in an early match tomorrow. Assuming Simone Inzaghi meets expectations with a win against Le Rondinelle, that means that Roma must find victory against the underachieving I Granata.

Roma v. Torino: January 5th. 20:45 CET/2:45 EST. Stadio Olimpico, Roma.

Well, underachieving may be putting too fine a point on it. For a club that had quite a lot of fighting spirit in the 2010s, Torino has been shockingly poor in the 2019-2020 season, with many tifosi calling for Walter Mazzarri’s head. Andrea Belotti, the oft-linked-to-Roma Italian striker who is now in his fifth season with Torino, has had a fine season so far with seven goals in twelve matches, but goalscoring hasn’t been the problem for Il Toro. Barring a humiliating four-day span that featured a 3-0 loss to Inter and a 4-0 loss to Lazio, Torino has found the net. Yet their incredibly leaky defense has allowed nearly as many goals as seventeenth-placed Sampdoria. Roma’s forward corps has enough grit and talent in it that they should be able to exploit a weak squad on the verge of firing its manager; the main question is how much rust they’ll have to shake off after the winter break.

Perhaps the most exciting news for Romanisti is that the doctor’s office at Trigoria is starting to get a little less crowded. Although Justin Kluivert looks to be out this match due to a muscular problem, the Dutchman’s injury timetable would indicate that he’ll be back in the side by the time Roma play Juventus on the 12th. Meanwhile, it does look as if Henrikh Mkhitaryan and Cengiz Ünder will be back in the side, although the question remains how they can break into the forward rotation with Nicolo Zaniolo, Edin Džeko, Lorenzo Pellegrini, and Diego Perotti working so well together before the winter break.

As we enter 2020, I’m most interested to see how Zaniolo and Pellegrini can work to play in tandem on the pitch. Obviously, both Italians have talent to spare, with Paulo Fonseca going as far as to say that Nicolo can “become the best player in Italy” by continuing to develop his decision-making ability. Yet it is apparent that if Roma wishes to build any semblance of a title-winning side, it will have to do so with a backbone featuring Zaniolo and Pellegrini. Sure, you can argue that players like Gianluca Mancini, Amadou Diawara, and Justin Kluivert will also play an important role, but the stars of this club will most definitely be The Kid and Roma’s new Capitano Futuro. If they can develop a stronger chemistry this year, it will make the Giallorossi all the more dangerous in attack.

Roma simply needs to get the job done against Torino tomorrow. If this were Luciano Spalletti’s Roma, or Rudi Garcia’s Roma, or, god forbid, Zdenek Zeman’s Second Roma, I’d be terrified of a match against a mid-table side. Thank Totti for Paulo Fonseca.

The holiday break wasn’t enough for some of Roma’s walking wounded to recover.

Roma are back in action after a two week holiday hiatus. Despite the long layoff and plenty of R&R for many of the players, Roma will still carry a fairly lengthy injured list into this one. Bryan Cristante, Davide Santon, Justin Kluivert, Javier Pastore, and Davide Zappacosta all remain out.

Paulo Fonseca issued updates on two of them, Kluivert and Pastore, saying, “Kluivert has started training with the team again but needs another week - I’d rather not risk him. He could be ready after the Juventus game. Pastore has a bone oedema and it’s not easy to fix. He’s recovering but needs time.”

Meanwhile, Federico Fazio was also left off the match day roster for this one with an abductor issue.

With that in mind, there shouldn’t be many, if any, changes from the side that defeated Fiorentina in Roma’s last match a fortnight ago. The defense in front of Pau Lopez is expected to consist of Aleksandar Kolarov, Chris Smalling, Gianluca Mancini, and Alessandro Florenzi. Florenzi is currently projected to have a slight edge over Leonardo Spinazzola to retain his starting place.

With Cristante still sidelined, Fonseca will again turn to the double pivot of Amadou Diawara and Jordan Veretout. In front of them will be Lorenzo Pellegrini in the trequartista role. The Italian will be looking to maintain his sizzling pre-break form.

Flanking Pellegrini will be Nicoló Zaniolo on the right and likely Diego Perotti on the left. The Argentine is currently being tipped over Henrikh Mkhitaryan. Lastly, rounding out the starting XI will be Edin Dzeko as the lone striker.
