We had to really dig deep to find positives from this one!

While the rest of the footballing world was up in arms over the Europe Super League announcement and the controversy that's sure to ensue over the coming weeks and months, Roma had a seemingly easy fixture on their plates: a venture northward to face 17th place Torino. Andrea Belotti and friends may have been a surprising relegation battler, but they were fighting the drop all the same.

With a third-minute goal from Borja Mayoral that withstood a VAR challenge, things started off well enough for Roma but that would be the extent of the good news for the Giallorosse yesterday in Torino. The remaining 87 minutes saw shaky defending, hasty challenges, missed attempts, and Roma going down to 10 men after Amadou Diawara drew two yellow cards in roughly 20 minutes.

As you might expect, we're really going to have to mine the depths to find a positive spin from yesterday's thrashing.

Amadou Diawara

Two yellow cards in 20 minutes kind of says it all, doesn't it? I suppose it didn't really matter in the end, but you'd like to see more composure from a substitute than that. Diawara has had a confounding season in some ways, but this was one of the few unequivocally dour notes from the 23-year-old midfielder.

Federico Fazio

As much as I'd love to vouch for my maybe distant cousin from Argentina (I have Fazios in my family tree), the rust on Captain Caveman was hard to hide yesterday. Playing in only his sixth match in 2021, Fazio looked okay in some respects (seven clearances and four interceptions) but was culpable on Torino's second and third goals, getting beat to the ball by Andrea Belotti both times. First by allowing Torino's number nine to fire off a shot which was eventually tapped in by Simone Zaza and then again when Belotti stripped him of the ball before sliding it over to Tomas Rincon for the third goal.

Roger Ibañez

While it feels wrong to include a defender on this list after Roma conceded three goals, Ibañez was one of the few Roma players worth his salt yesterday. In 90 minutes, Ibañez completed 87% of his passes, fired two shots on goal, drew two fouls, completed four successful dribbles (for a defender!!), cleared six balls, won five headers, and completed 9-12 long passes.

Ibañez has had some inconsistencies this season to be sure, but this guy just looks like Super League material, doesn't he?

Stuck In Between

Antonio Mirante: Roma's David Duchovny stand-in faced 27 shots yesterday, making eight saves (six in the box) and completed 79% of his passes. While that's all pretty good, his rebound control escaped him and gave Torino more second-chance opportunities than they should have had.

Pedro: Set up Borja Mayoral's goal, but apart from that he was decidedly average. We have two more years of this, folks. Strap in.

Borja Mayoral: Scored Roma's only goal and completed 80% of his passes but lost the ball 10 times in only 30 touches.

Bryan Reynolds: Another ‘meh’ performance from Reynolds, but considering the circumstances—his age and that this was only his second-ever start—we can't really be too critical. Reynolds definitely looked more comfortable and aggressive on the ball but was given fits by Cristian Ansaldi at the other end. The talent is obvious with this young Texan, Roma just has to be patient.

Plenty of halos to go around after yesterday's victory.

Roma weren't exactly an unstoppable juggernaut yesterday, but in their 2-1 victory over Parma, the Giallorossi played with a greater sense of purpose and harmony than we've seen since the restart began in late June. While Roma found the back of the net twice yesterday, their 3.3 expected goals was actually their highest mark since they played Lecce in late February and marked only the fifth time this season they've registered an xG mark of three or higher.

So, whether you rely on advanced statistics or simply the eye test, the increased efficiency and fluidity in Roma's attack was hard to miss yesterday. The level of the opponent was a factor (indeed, all their matches with >3 xG came against Lecce (twice), SPAL, Udinese and Parma) but for a team reeling on the table and seemingly bereft of ideas on the pitch, yesterday's performance was just what the doctor ordered and likely spared Paulo Fonseca's job for at least one week.

With that in mind, let’s pass out some halos and/or pitchforks.

Bryan Cristante*

We're throwing an asterisk on this one because he was played remarkably out of position. I'm not sure Cristante has ever played his natural position with Roma, and whether you think he's a holding midfielder, an attacking midfielder or something in between, one thing is for sure: he's definitely not a defender.

Working as a makeshift center-back in Fonseca's three-man back-line yesterday, Cristante's defensive shortcomings were on full display. In 90 minutes, Cristante completed only one successful tackle, lost possession nine times and committed one hugely consequential foul on Andreas Cornelius. The penalty call itself may have been misguided, but he certainly didn't himself any favors in his angle of pursuit or the timing of his challenge.

One can't help but shake the feeling that Cristante will never self-actualize in the capital, but forcing him to play center-back is just a bad idea all around.

There were a few other dour performances yesterday, but none quite as egregious Roma's miscast center-back, so let's get to the saints.

Henrikh Mkhitaryan

I'm not sure what else needs to be said at this point, but loans seldom work out better than this; Mkhitaryan has been a godsend for Roma. In 89 minutes yesterday, Mkhitaryan turned in a man of the match performance, scoring one goal and setting up another. Micki also had six tackles, five key passes and was a menace in the final third, particularly in the second half:

Roma really took control of the match in the second half, and one look at that heat-map shows you whose foot was on the gas—at this point, as Mkhitaryan goes, so goes Roma.

Jordan Veretout

The stats were very kind to Veretout yesterday—92% passing, two key passes, 40% cross completion, 100% on long-balls, and 11.2 km covered—but all you need to know about his run against Parma was this:

You can't really sense the distance or power of the shot based on that clip, but it does shows the exquisite technique required to plonk that ball down in the lower right hand corner, just past the outstretched hands of the keeper.

There have been many Nainggolan-esque flashes from Veretout this season, but yesterday was a vintage Radja-like performance from the 27-year-old Frenchman.

Bruno Peres

After being dropped completely against Napoli on Sunday, Peres turned in one of his best performances ever in a Roma shirt. In only 66 minutes yesterday, Peres took 72 touches, rattled off five shots, completed 98% of his passes, set up Mkhitaryan's first half goal and hit on five of eight crosses.

At this stage in his career, Peres is very much a boom or bust player, so the odds of him repeating this performance each and every week are incredibly slim, but against Parma he was as effective as he’s ever been during his tumultuous time with Roma.

The Giallorossi also received impressive performances from Gianluca Mancini, Leonardo Spinazzola, Lorenzo Pellegrini and Roger Ibañez against Parma, but for the sake of brevity we'll end it here.

Until next time!

It's been a few weeks since we've been able to enjoy a Roma match. Catch all today's highlights right here.

Time will tell if today's victory over Parma was a blip on the radar or a step in the right direction, but it was most assuredly the best performance Roma has turned in during the Serie A restart. After falling down early to a controversial penalty call, Roma kept their foot on the gas, kept pressing and produced better football as the match wore on. They tempted fate a few times down the stretch, but goals from Henrikh Mkhitaryan and Jordan Veretout were enough to seal a much needed victory earlier this evening.

A thunderous second half goal from Jordan Veretout halted Roma's losing streak.

In Roma's four prior matches since the restart, we've seen Paulo Fonseca make some wild match-to-match alterations, including swapping out ten men from one lineup to the next and shifting from his preferred 4-2-3-1 formation to the three-man back-lines we've seen over the past two matches. Some of that tinkering was forced by injuries, while some of it stemmed simply from realizing what he was doing wasn't working. No matter the case, Fonseca didn't rest on his laurels against Parma either.

While his varied tactical approach produced some slightly livelier results against Napoli on Sunday, Fonseca made further changes today, including a handful of surprising technical decisions prior to kickoff: dropping Justin Kluivert from the squad altogether, calling up Bruno Peres after he was left out on Sunday and perhaps most controversial of all, starting Bryan Cristante at center-back.

And you don't need to be a Roma lifer to know where this is heading. A mere six minutes into the match, Cristante's inexperience as a defender reared its ugly head as he was judged to have taken Andreas Cornelius down in the box in the sixth minute. While this incident was initially ruled benign by the referee, VAR would reverse course in the tenth minute, awarding Parma a penalty, which was easily converted by Juraj Kucka to give Parma an early lead.

Despite trailing early, Roma continued to commit numbers forward, overloading the center of the pitch to give Leonardo Spinazzola and Bruno Peres room on the wings. Roma's two wingbacks found ample space and time to create from out wide, pumping in cross after cross into the Parma box.

Roma weren't able to create any clear cut chances in the early stages of this match, but Fonseca's intent—utilizing a less wing-reliant formation—was evident, even if it did lead to more chances being created from wide areas.

The Giallorossi's best chance of the first half (to that point) came in the 17th minute thanks to a beautifully struck long and low shot from Lorenzo Pellegrini that clipped the left post of Parma's goal, missing an equalizer by a matter of inches.

Roma would win the possession battle through large swaths of the first half but just couldn't find that final breakthrough as their crosses were dealt with rather easily by Parma's defense, but Fonseca's crew would hit pay-dirt late in the half.

Henrik Mkhitaryan: 43rd Minute (Roma 1, Parma 1)

Good work all around here as Bruno Peres was able to corral the loose ball and evade a Parma defender before taking a touch and finding Mkhitaryan in the middle of the box. From there, Roma's #77 struck a quick and perfectly placed side-footed shot to knot the match at one apiece.

Moments later, Roma missed a golden chance to take the lead when Gianluca Mancini, practically wide open at the far post, shanked a header just wide of goal.

Despite some moments of frustration and a questionable penalty call, Roma headed to the dressing room on level pegging with the visitors.

Second Half

The opening 15 minutes saw a reinvigorated Roma, showing more energy and sense of purpose than we've seen in quite some time: Peres and Spinazzola kept exploiting wide areas while Pellegrini, Veretout and Mkhitaryan orchestrated some quick and succinct stretches through the middle of the park.

And it wouldn't take long for that more direct and pragmatic approach to pay off.

Jordan Veretout: 57th Minute (Roma 2, Parma 1)

What a hit from Veretout here. No hesitation whatsoever, he just struck the ball with the sweet spot of his boot, giving it just enough swerve to fool the keeper into thinking it was sailing wide before tucking in the back of the net. This was an emphatic goal, and given how much they've struggled in attack recently, this was precisely the type of strike they need to buoy their spirits.

Roma would continue to surge ahead as the match approached the 70th minute, stringing together passages of play that went extinct during their three-match losing skid. With distribution coming from the back, Roma were able to transition from defense to attack in the blink of an eye, keeping the Parma defense on their toes. Perhaps even more impressive, they were able to maintain pressure on Parma's back-line without constantly pumping balls into Edin Dzeko: the pace and spread of play was as even as we've seen since the restart.

All that good will was nearly undone in the 74th minute when Gianluca Mancini was nearly cited for a handball in the box. The ref made an appeal to VAR, but Mancini was spared as Kucka was judged to have made contact with the ball before Mancini's elbow/arm. This could have crippled Roma and the sense of relief was evident on their faces almost immediately.

That sense of relief was nearly dashed seconds later. In a blink and you'll miss it kind of play, Gervinho sneaked behind the Roma defense and beat Pau Lopez one-v-one, slipping the ball right in between Pau Lopez's legs, seemingly grabbing a backbreaking equalizer against his former club. Fortunately, he was quickly judged offside, but Roma tempted fate twice with 15 minutes remaining and somehow managed to come out clean.

Fonseca would make his second set of changes in the 83rd minute, bringing on the Spanish duo of Gonzalo Villar and Carles Perez for Diawara and Pellegrini. And Villar had a clean strike at goal minutes after coming on, lashing a shot in the box right at Luigi Seppe, who was quick to knock it down, denying Roma a rebound. It was a bit of a hasty effort—he likely had more time than he realized—but kudos to Villar for getting right in the thick of things.

Nicolo Zaniolo would make his second straight appearance—albeit a short one—coming on for Mkhitaryan in the 90th minute. Roma would survive the six minutes of stoppage time, even missing a few chances to increase the lead, but their efforts were good enough to halt the three-match skid.

Conclusions

There were some jenky moments in the first half and plenty of people questioning Fonseca's personnel selections this evening, but the Giallrossi's effort tonight, particularly in the second half, was exactly what the club needed. Roma were far more energetic and played with much more resolve than we've seen since the restart. Punctuated by Veretout's thumping goal, Roma showcased the pace, precision and passion that's been missing for large stretches of the season.

Unfortunately, this performance came a few rounds too late to save their Champions League hopes for next season (barring a Europa League victory next month) but this victory should hopefully set them up for back-to-back wins when they face 19th place Brescia on Saturday.

A win would help, huh?

If the results on the pitch didn't clue you in, the deluge of rumors regarding Paulo Fonseca's future surely did—Roma are in dire straights at the moment. After eeking out a win against Sampdoria to kickoff the restart, Roma have dropped three consecutive matches and are in danger of falling out Serie A's European places altogether.

There were some slight improvements against Napoli last weekend, so there is hope, however slim, that Roma might win this one.

There were signs of improvement against Napoli, but Roma still lost its third straight. The Giallorossi badly need to find a way to secure three points in this one.

On Sunday in Naples, Paulo Fonseca attempted to take the bull by the horns. After back-to-back listless performances, Fonseca made a tactical switch to a three-man back line. The switch in formation, along with the heavy personnel turnover, seemed to inject some life into a reeling Roma side. However, it wasn’t enough as the Giallorossi still fell at the San Paolo for their third straight defeat.

It’s the second time this calendar year that Roma has lost three straight in the league. In fact, since the beginning of 2020, Roma has the fifth fewest points in Serie A. With such a drop-off in performance, the Giallorossi are now desperately clinging to a Europa League spot. Roma is now even joint fifth with Napoli, two points ahead of Milan and six ahead of surprise package Hellas Verona. The ever tightening standings make a victory all the more necessary on Wednesday.

Roma v. Parma: July 8th. 21:45 CET/3:45 EDT. Stadio Olimpico, Rome.

Of course, the returns to the pitch of Pau Lopez and Nicolò Zaniolo on Sunday will bring some optimism for the stretch run. But on the flip side, Roma will be sweating the loss of Chris Smalling due to a muscle injury. The severity of that strain could really test Roma’s back line.

Meanwhile, Parma has also struggled since returning to action in June. I Ducali have hovered on the cusp of the Europa League spots for much of the season, but three straight losses have seen them fall to twelfth in the table. With that in mind, this one should feature two sides desperate to get back to winning ways.

Last League Match

November 10, 2019: Parma 2, Roma 0

This match was the last in a brutal stretch for an injury depleted Roma side. Seven matches in 22 days was just too much for short-handed Roma to bear, as a compact Parma punished a Roma side bereft of idea.

Roma controlled more than 60% of possession in this one, but just couldn’t put enough quality shots on target. Aleksandar Kolarov hit the post on a free-kick and Luigi Sepe made a big save on the rebound to keep out Roma’s best chance. A Cengiz Ünder rocket from distance was kept out later in the match by Sepe, as well. But outside of that, none of the rest of Roma’s 17 shots was particularly dangerous.

Parma on the other hand, despite being considerably out-possessed, consistently tested Pau Lopez with eight shots on target. Parma finally broke the deadlock through substitute Mattia Sprocati in the 68th minute. Then Andreas Cornelius, who was a danger throughout the match, sealed the three points for Parma in stoppage time.

*Note- Roma did play Parma a second time this season in the Coppa Italia Round of 16. That trip to the Tardini was much more fruitful for the Giallorossi. Roma defeated Parma 2-0 behind a Lorenzo Pellegrini double. Highlights of that one can be seen below.

What To Watch For

Roma Needs to Build on Sunday’s Positives

The outcome of the match may not have been what the Giallorossi were hoping for, but there were some positives to build off of from Sunday’s trip to the San Paolo. For one, the Giallorossi got on the scoresheet for the first time in two matches. Fonseca’s side also looked dangerous at various points in the match. That’s much more than can be said for the Udinese and Milan losses.

Roma will have to sustain its attack for longer periods going forward, but the signs were there that the Giallorossi may be rounding into form a bit. In this match, Roma should control much more possession than they did against Napoli. How the Giallorossi utilize that possession will be key. In the first match up in Parma, Roma took the majority of its shots from outside the box. That’s not going to get it done. Which brings us to our next point.

Roma Needs to Shoot More

Despite the Roma looking a bit better in attack on Sunday, the Giallorossi still aren’t shooting the ball enough. After unleashing 23 shots (10 on target) in their return to action against Sampdoria, the Giallorossi haven’t come close to matching that output over the last three matches. Against Napoli on Sunday, Roma managed just seven shots and only three on target, which was just about on par with seven shots (one on target) against Milan.

This may be stating the obvious, but if you don’t shoot you can’t score. Roma will have to get back to those Sampdoria numbers if the Giallorossi expect to pick up their goal scoring rate. Roma’s xG the last three matches has been under one each time. And for good reason. You can’t expect to score many goals if you aren’t putting shots on target.

Parma’s Speedy Counter-Attack

The Gialloblu are generally content to keep a compact shape and cede possession to their opponents. As we saw the first time these teams met, Parma will frustrate an opposing attack by limiting it’s quality chances while waiting for the right time to strike. In that match, Parma’s second goal came on the counter-attack as the Giallorossi threw men forward trying to equalize.

With one of the lowest possession rates in the league (44.8%), Parma has to be dangerous when an opportunity presents itself. And with speedy wingers Gervinho and Dejan Kuluseveski, the Ducali boast the statistically most dangerous counter-attack in Serie A. Parma has hit opponents eight times in this fashion, more than any other team in the league.

Meanwhile, Roma have conceded five times to a counter-attack—joint worst in the league. The Giallorossi will have to limit Parma’s chances on the break if they’re to get three points out of this one. Because Parma has proven to be deadly when given space to run in the open field.

Expect less turnover as Roma looks to build on some of the positives from Sunday’s match.

Besides the returns of Pau Lopez and Nicolò Zaniolo, the big takeaway from Sunday’s match in Naples was Paulo Fonseca shifting to a three man back line. Roma is expected to continue with the 3-5-2 formation as it hosts Parma on Wednesday at the Olimpico.

Roma still has work to do after falling 2-1 in Naples, but there were more positives to build upon compared to the previous two matches. With his side putting in a better performance, expect far less turnover from Fonseca than we’ve seen in recent matches. After making 10, yes 10 changes, from the Udinese match to the Napoli match, just a handful of changes are expected for this one.

Of course, one of those changes will be forced with Chris Smalling exiting with a muscle strain last match. Smalling is expected to be replaced by Federico Fazio in the new three man defense. Flanking Fazio will be Gianluca Mancini and Roger Ibañez. That trio will sit in front of Pau Lopez, who looked sharp in his return from a fractured wrist.

Meanwhile, only one change is expected along the five man midfield. The central trio of Jordan Veretout, Lorenzo Pellegrini, and Henrikh Mkhitaryan are all currently being tipped to start for the second consecutive match. Pellegrini’s place could be in doubt, but he seems to be favored over Bryan Cristante.

After probably his best match in a Roma shirt, Leonardo Spinazzola looks poised to shift to the right wing back position. This will allow for Aleksandar Kolarov to return to his starting place on the left.

Up front Edin Dzeko will again lead the line. However, Justin Kluivert is expected to lose his starting place after a very pedestrian performance. Carles Perez is expected to replace the Dutchman in support of Dzeko. However, there is a chance that Cengiz Ünder could get the nod.
