Another defeat means it's time to pour through the dregs of Roma's loss to Sampdoria—their third straight defeat.

A day after falling to Claudio Ranieri's Sampdoria side in a 2-0 defeat, Roma is left once again to pick up the pieces after a frustrating loss in which the Giallorossi's old familiar patterns were once again at play. Plagued by individual errors, missed opportunities, and defensive failings, Roma slipped to their third consecutive defeat. Yesterday's loss to Ranieri was Roma's fourth in their last five matches and marked the 10th time they've dropped points in their past 16 matches dating back to the end of February.

Yesterday's defeat wasn't the most egregious of those 10 disappointments, but it made apparent what we've long suspected: this current Roma team just doesn't have the proverbial “it", however one defines that. Roma remains mired in seventh place and has a mixed bag of fixtures remaining (Man U, Crotone, Inter, Lazio, and Spezia), so Roma may yet give a reason to smile but for all intents and purposes, Roma's season, and Fonseca's career with the club, is effectively over.

So, much like the fallout from their 6-2 defeat to United last week, we can't in good conscience pass out any halos after Roma was beaten so soundly by a seemingly inferior opponent.

Daniel Fuzato

I still have high hopes for the young Brazilian with the Alisson-like build and explosivity, but, while he did well to snatch the ball out of the air multiple times yesterday—showing a quick first step and a keen sense of timing—his error on Sampdoria's first goal was inexcusable. Granted, he had no way of knowing that Marash Kumbulla would slip before receiving the pass, but Fuzato could have avoided the entire situation had he put a little more oomph behind the pass.

As it was, Fuzato made five saves, one punch, and two high claims in his second-ever start for Roma.

Marash Kumbulla

In some ways, yesterday was a fitting encapsulation of Kumbulla's first season in Rome: he showed some promise but ultimately left the match bruised, battered, and sharing the guilt in yet another mistake from the Roma defense. Kumbulla is a young player and has a tremendous amount of potential resting in his 21-year-old legs, but this season has become a bit of a wash for him developmentally.

He should be a pillar of this club moving forward, so let's hope for a smoother road for Kumbulla next season and beyond.

Edin Dzeko

Dzeko missed a brace by a matter of nanoseconds when he had two goals disallowed for being a hair's breadth offside but he had no such excuse when Emil Audero stonewalled him from the penalty spot.

Dzeko has done more than enough to earn his gold watch from Roma's front office, but this relationship has reached its end and it feels like, now more than ever, that they need to go their separate ways.

Despite all the preceding doom and gloom, there were a few semi-noteworthy performances from the men in maroon yesterday.

Bruno Peres: Three key passes, one dribble, two tackles, three interceptions, and 2-4 on long passes. Peres is definitely ending his Roma career on a high note.

Bryan Cristante: Back in his normal midfield spot, Cristante had one on-target shot, two dribbles, three tackles, three interceptions, three clearances, and hit on 3-4 long passes.

Chris Smalling: A much better run than against his former club last week, Smalling had one on-target shot, one dribble, and three clearances.

Ebrima Darboe: We'll end it with a shout-out to the 20-year-old Gambian midfielder who made his club debut today, coming on for Gonzalo Villar in the 82nd minute. He's definitely one to keep an eye on in the future.

Come for the Roma game, stay for Claudio Ranieri.

Today’s game saw a very aggressive Sampdoria come flying out the blocks, not even bothering to stand off of Roma’s backline and wait for mistakes but put the full-press on Daniel Fuzato’s teammates. That meant even more passing back to third-choice Roma keeper Fuzato, even more flaring wide from Roma’s players in the build-up phase, and some actual good, technical play from Roma as a result. But it lasted only for a moment.

You felt like Roma had to punish Sampdoria for their over-confidence in the first half, if not the first quarter of the game, otherwise, the momentum would be lost for the rest of Sunday. And it certainly was lost when Fuzato ended the half by passing the ball straight to the opposition, setting Sampdoria up with a clear route to goal and going 1-0 ahead right before half-time. Would Roma do, in the second half, what United had done to Roma on the comeback?

No chance.

Unfortunately, Edin Dzeko couldn’t find his bearing to stay onside all-game long, let alone magic up the nerve to become Roma’s designated penalty taker. With several Roma goals ruled out for Dzeko being called offside in both halves, and Roma’s number 9 seeing his 71st-minute penalty effort saved by Sampdoria keeper Audero - by which time Roma were already 2-0 down in the game—it was a long, long way off from being Dzeko’s or Roma’s day.

The only real highlights we can bring you are Sampdoria coach and Roma legend Claudio Ranieri’s appearance on the touchline, and a rare start for Fuzato complemented by a Serie A appearance off the bench for Roma Primavera midfield starlet Ebrima Darboe.

Another dreadful match from a club that looks ready for summer vacation.

Following their victory over Crotone on Saturday and Atalanta’s draw with Sassuolo earlier today, Inter Milan officially sewed up the 2020-2021 Scudetto this afternoon, sapping a bit of drama from the remainder of Serie A's Matchday 34 fixtures. Roma's title dreams died months ago and thanks to their April woes, their Champions League dreams for next season were dashed just the same, making today's clash against Sampdoria at the Luigi Ferraris a rather strange affair.

However, free from the strictures of table watching and cursed with more injuries than you can count, Paulo Fonseca had the luxury of getting a bit nutty with his starting lineup today, reinserting Max Kumbulla into the first eleven, giving rare starts to Davide Santon and Daniel Fuzato while also unleashing the two-striker look with Edin Dzeko and Borja Mayoral starting from the opening whistle.

Fonseca's new-look 3-4-1-2 looked lively early in the match, forcing Sampdoria into some hard-scrambled defending in only the third minute when Borja Mayoral got loose in the box only to be denied by a last-ditch sliding block from Lorenzo Tonelli—one of many he made in the first half.

While both sides still settling into the match, we got our first real look at Daniel Fuzato this season, who rose to the occasion in the eighth minute, plucking a Sampdoria freekick out of midair to end a set-piece threat before it began. It wasn't a terribly threatening ball but Fuzato was on it in an instant.

Sampdoria would threaten Fuzato's area again moments later when Morten Thorsby was played into the near post only to be denied by a Marash Kumbulla blocked shot. The Genoa-based club would find themselves at Roma's doorstep again in the 12th minute when Manolo Gabbiadini slipped behind Roma's backline, chasing down a beautifully struck ball over the top, but the Italian veteran couldn't settle it in time and the chance went wasted but he was finding ample room behind Smalling, Mancini, and Kumbulla.

Roma would jab back the very next minute when Santon played Borja Mayoral into the box with a whipped low-cross from the right flank. The timing, weight, and trajectory were perfect but, just as he did several minutes earlier, Tonelli threw his body in front of the ball to deny Roma a crack at goal. The Giallorossi would threaten again off the ensuing corner when Chris Smalling's towering header was saved by Emil Audero.

The opening quarter-hour of this match featured some pretty wide-open football with Roma probing the ball through the middle in an effort to get Mayoral and Dzeko working together while Sampdoria found some success down the left through Tommaso Augello and Jakub Jankto, who tested Fuzato in the 20th minute with a dipping cross towards the far right post, which Fuzato rose to claimed with aplomb.

The back and forth action continued in the 22nd minute when Henrikh Mkhitaryan and Edin Dzeko led a two-vs-three counter-attack, with Mkhitaryan playing Dzeko through the middle but the Big Bosnian managed little more than dribbling the counter to death, getting snuffed out by three Sampdoria defenders.

Dzeko almost had his moment in the sun in the 28th minute when Mkhitaryan once again set him up through the middle with a picture-perfect through ball, catching Dzeko in stride from about 30 yards out. Dzeko dribbled on Audero and slotted the ball home low and away but was quickly judged offside.

While Samp tested Fuzato with a few dangerous crosses and direct free kicks, their first actual shot of the match didn't come until the 34th minute when Valerio Verre, a former Roma academy product, fired wide of the mark.

But that simple attempt precipitated a solid two to three-minute spell where Roma simply could not dispossess Sampdoria, who did well to recycle possession around the edge of the 18-yard box, forcing Fuzato into another save in the 35th minute.

The match had definitely opened up but neither side created anything resembling a clear-cut chance, so it seemed like we would head into halftime scoreless. But in the 43rd minute, Edin Dzeko got loose down the left, pulled Audero off his line, and dribbled around the splayed-out keeper before firing a left-footed shot into the side netting. Placing the ball on Dzeko's left is far from ideal, but this was arguably Roma's best chance of the half and was emblematic of their approach to that point—pull the defense up through the middle and pick out Dzeko or Mayoral as they made split-second runs off the final defender.

After 44 largely untested minutes, Daniel Fuzato committed a horrible gaffe just before the stroke of halftime, playing a listless ball to Kumbulla on the left-hand side of the pitch. The pass, which seemed to die on the grass, was quickly picked off and immediately converted into a goal by Adrien Silva, who beat Fuzato low and to the right. Fuzato wasn't helped by Kumbulla, who appeared to slip, but this was an ugly end to the half for Roma's young keeper, who looked otherwise solid.

Second Half

As hard as it might be to believe, Roma started the second half by nearly repeating the very same error that gave Sampdoria the lead. With Smalling under pressure in Roma's defensive third, he played a slow, lilting ball back to Fuzato in the box. WIth Gabbidiani barreling towards the loose ball, Fuzato spring into action and barely managed to clear the ball away from harm.

This would be a harbinger of things to come for Roma, who completely came apart in the second half, though they would throw a few counter punches Sampdoria's way. After narrowly avoiding another goal, Roma set out to create a chance of their own in the 52nd minute when Cristante swung a cross into Mkhitaryan at the near post only to be denied by Audero again, who quickly covered up the near post—and good thing because Mkhitaryan would have had a gimme goal.

Despite the mounting frustration, Roma continued to poke and prod Samp's backline and nearly had an equalizer just shy of the hour mark when Edin Dzeko beat Audero low and away. Dzeko, who was played into space by Cristante and Mayoral, was again called offside. It was a veritable carbon copy of the first goal: he's played into space, dribbles his way into a one-v-one, beats the keeper, scores easily, but gets flagged offside.

Dzeko's frustrating would continue to boil over moments later when Santon whipped in a perfect cross to Dzeko at the doorstep of the penalty box. But, rather than fighting for position, Dzeko remained flat-footed, though he still found the energy to complain.

Fonseca would make his first change of the match in the 64th minute, bringing on Roger Ibañez for Kumbulla, who took multiple hits to the knee and hip throughout the match.

With little more than 25 minutes remaining, Roma was down but not out, but Sampdoria crushed Roma's remaining hopes in the blink of an eye in the 65th minute when Jakub Jankto capitalized on a Sampdoria counter-attack, bursting into space and breezing past Santon down the right before beating a hapless Fuzato in goal.

Roma came right back and had yet another goal disallowed via offside. Borja Mayoral scored off a quick counter from the Giallorossi but, unfortunately, Dzeko was offside during the buildup phase and the goal was quickly scrubbed out after a brief VAR appeal.

The Giallorossi's luck would change a few minutes later when Gianluca Mancini fired a cross in from the right edge of the area. Adrien Silva used picture-perfect technique while defending Mancini—head up, hands behind his back—but the moment he played the ball, Silva inexplicably put his hands up, striking the ball in the process and giving Roma a penalty.

So, it was all good, right?

Nope, Edin Dzeko jogged up to the ball, picked out the lower right corner only to be stoned by Audero.

And that was really that. The final 15 to 20 minutes of the match were excruciating.

Final Thoughts

Bare down, folks. We only have to make it through four more of these.

Serie A, Round 34.

Welp, this is it. Inter Milan has officially wrapped up the Scudetto, ending Juventus’ run of nine-straight titles, and while the remainder of the top four is unsettled, with Roma stuck on 55 points—12 back of fourth-place—the Giallorossi's season is effectively over. There is no hope of a late-season top-four rally and the Europa League title is likely Manchester United's to lose after they waxed Roma 6-2 last Thursday.

If all of that sounds like a bleak backdrop for Roma's Round 34 match against Sampdoria, well, that's because it is. Unable to sustain their peaks from earlier this season, Roma is in danger of falling out of Italy's European places full stop.

But, with nothing to gain or lose from the remaining five matches, Paulo Fonseca is likely free to experiment with his lineups, giving minutes to some of the squad's youngest players while likely also auditioning for his next gig.

Roma again looks like a MASH unit as the Giallorossi head into Genoa to face Samp.

Well. We spoke too soon. When it came to Roma’s health heading into Old Trafford we were optimistic considering it was the healthiest the Giallorossi had been all season and just in time for the biggest match in years.

Then the events of Thursday played out. Jordan Veretout went down in the first five minutes of the match with a hamstring issue. He was followed off the pitch by Pau Lopez with a shoulder injury and Leonardo Spinazzola with his own hamstring issue just before halftime. And just like that Roma enter Sunday's match against Sampdoria again looking like the walking wounded.

Despite the muscle injuries incurred by the recently recovered Veretout and Spinazzola, Fonseca insisted there was no reason to think they weren’t ready to go.

“Something went wrong, clearly. I can talk about Spinazzola and Veretout, who both played in the game on Thursday. Both of them trained during the week, then they both played against Cagliari - all the signs were positive. In this part of the season we need those players. Given all the signs were positive, there was no sense in deciding it was too risky to play them in Manchester. We had no indications to make us think that.”

For this one, Roma will be without those three players. In addition, Pedro, Stephan El Shaarawy, Riccardo Calafiori, and Nicoló Zaniolo all remain on the sidelines. Throw in the fatigue of the players who played 90 minutes in Manchester and turnover should be the name of the game this weekend.

Fonseca didn’t field too many questions about his line-up for tomorrow in the pre-match press conference. However, there was one about the goalkeeper situation and the possibility of Daniel Fuzato playing, which Fonseca admitted is a possibility given the injury to Lopez and the compact schedule.

I think Antonio Mirante will likely start in Genoa on Sunday, as he could use some confidence ahead of Thursday’s second leg. So, I’ll tip him to start with Fuzato more likely to get a look against Crotone next weekend.

In front of Mirante, we are likely to see a completely turned over back three. After being suspended in England, Gianluca Mancini returns to the starting XI, along with Max Kumbulla who recently returned from injury but has yet to play. Joining them will likely be Federico Fazio, as Roma gears up for another two-match week.

Moving into the midfield, I expect Amadou Diawara to be rested. So this could be the match where Bryan Cristante returns to his natural midfield position alongside Gonzalo Villar. They will be flanked by Bruno Peres and one of Davide Santon or Bryan Reynolds. I’ll tip Reynolds this time around.

In the attack, Borja Mayoral will lead the line and Carles Perez will also get a start. However, due to the injuries to Pedro and SES, one of Pellegrini and Mkhitaryan will have to start again. I’d tip Roma’s captain with the veteran getting a much-needed rest.

How long will the hangover from Roma’s massive loss to Manchester United last?

Look, I’ll keep it level with you folks: this season is over. Paulo Fonseca sounds like he’s got one-and-a-half feet out the door, the rumor mill has practically certified that Maurizio Sarri is Roma’s next manager, and the injuries sustained by Pau Lopez, Jordan Veretout, and Leonardo Spinazzola look to be season-enders. Despite all that, and despite the 6-2 thrashing they just received from Manchester United, Roma somehow has the gall to continue playing matches! I don’t really understand it either, but we’re all in this deep with this incarnation of the Giallorossi; we might as well see how the story ends.

Sampdoria vs. Roma: May 2nd. 20:45 CET/2:45 EDT. Luigi Ferraris, Genova.

But first, a look back to last January.

Last Match

January 3rd: Roma 1, Sampdoria 0

Remember hard-fought wins made on the back of Edin Džeko? Those were kinda fun, right? Well, Roma’s last match against Sampdoria was one of those, with the rain creating a topsy-turvy match decided by a 72nd-minute goal from the Bosnian Diamond. Rick Karsdorp’s assist was essential to the goal, and despite the poor weather, you could argue that this was the Dutchman’s best match of the season. If Karsdorp has cemented his role as starting right-back for the Giallorossi, it’s because of matches like this one.

Here’s what Bren had to say post-match:

Paulo Fonseca has been heavily criticized for his failure to make second-half adjustments this season, so it’s only right that we praise him for flipping the correct switches in the second half this afternoon. Roma didn’t see quite as much of the ball in the second half, but they did well to vary their approach, working the ball down both flanks to keep Sampdoria’s defense guessing and fired 13 shots on goal in the second 45 minutes alone.

When you consider they were fresh off an 11-day break and were basically playing on marshland, this was a huge victory for Roma. They had every excuse in the book to play Sampdoria to a scoreless draw, but thanks to their second-half surge Roma were able to retain their grasp on third place for one more week.

It’s wild to look back now to four months ago when Paulo Fonseca still seemed like he could find success in Rome. Those were simpler times.

What To Watch For

Reynolds Returns?

The season is practically over for everyone involved with Roma, but on the bright side, that means some of the younger players are likely to get some serious minutes. Given Rick Karsdorp’s injury history, it hasn’t been entirely surprising to see Bryan Reynolds get Serie A starts over the past month, and he’s shown some promise to date. It would certainly provide a silver lining to this underwhelming season if Reynolds showed himself to be Roma’s next starting right-back in these final weeks. At the very least, I’d like to keep the dream of Calafiori and Reynolds as Roma’s world-class starting full-backs alive for just a little while longer.

Following the blowout to Manchester United, there were rumors that the Friedkins had had enough and were set to sack Paulo Fonseca before the end of the season. Those rumors didn’t come to pass, but even in his recent press conferences, Fonseca has had the tone of a dead man walking. I wish it hadn’t ended this way for Fonseca in Rome; I’ve never heard anyone say a bad word about him as a person, and I’m not particularly excited for the Roman Sarriball that looks to be on the horizon. Nevertheless, it’s safe to assume that Fonseca has six matches left as the manager of the Giallorossi. Whether you’re mourning his departure or toasting to it, watching Fonseca’s last matches with the club is a decent reason to keep watching Roma right now, even if the losses are making me want to pull my hair out.
