A bit of a mixed bag, but there were more bright notes from this defeat than you'd imagine, including two veteran stalwarts finishing the year on a high.

Repeat after me: this match didn't matter, this match didn't matter, this match didn't matter. With two games remaining on the Serie A slate and Roma's intrigue whittled all the way down to dispiriting debates about the merits of the UEFA Conference League, I promise that we'll find a new narrative when describing Roma's final two tilts of the season against Lazio and Spezia.

Despite the lack of consequence in yesterday's 3-1 defeat at the San Siro, Roma and Inter Milan treated neutral fans to a surprisingly entertaining affair. After gritting their way through the opening niceties yesterday, the two bitter rivals ripped off roughly 75 minutes of end-to-end attacking football, with the two clubs combining for 34 attempts. And if Roma were a bit more precise in the final third, this could have easily been a five or six-goal barnburner.

As it was, Roma fell to Inter for the first time since round two of the 2017-2018 season; another 3-1 defeat, one in which possible future Roma striker Mauro Icardi bagged a brace, canceling out Edin Dzeko's opening goal.

With José Mourinho set to takeover Roma at the end of the season, next year's Roma-Inter fixtures should be epic, but for now, let's pass out some halos and sharpen our pitchforks.

Davide Santon

Making only his ninth appearance of the season, Santon had a rough go of it yesterday evening and was incredibly lucky he wasn't given a straight red when he horse-collar tackled Alexis Sanchez in the first half, after slipping while trying to intercept a pass. Santon may have connected on every single one of his 39 passes, but the plaudits end there.

Santon has one year remaining on his deal with Roma, and unless Mourinho has some grand plans for him, a repeat of this year seems on the cards for Santon. Will he remain satisfied riding the pine or will he finally accept a move to a smaller club?

Marash Kumbulla

From moments of poise and polish that belie his 21 years to stretches where he looks like a complete fish out of water, Marash Kumbulla has been all over the map during his first season with Roma. The talent is obvious, but his detractors would have you believe he's first up in Mourinho’s firing line come July 1st. And with 90 minutes in absentia yesterday against Inter, he did little to build his case.

Kumbulla completed 95% of his passes and managed four tackles yesterday, but he struggled mightily against the likes of Lautaro Martinez and Romelu Lukaku. He's hardly the only defender to come under their thumb, but one of Kumbulla, Gianluca Mancini, Roger Ibañez, or Chris Smalling will end up on the outside looking in Roma’s defensive rotation next season.

Daniel Fuzato

He's still well built and athletic as the day is long, but Fuzato needs more seasoning before we can even begin to speculate about his future. He won't be Roma's starter next season, and probably not even the number two, but the club still needs to sort out his future—get him a loan somewhere he'll actually play next year and then make your decisions.

Henrikh Mkhitaryan

There was a time, not that long ago, where Mkhitaryan was a lock for weekly Serie A sainthood. Roma's double-double magician hit a bit of a rough patch in 2021 but has seemingly come to life over the past two to three matches. In addition to scoring Roma's only goal yesterday—his 11th Serie A strike this year—Mkhitaryan managed two shots on goal (both on target), chipped in three key passes, one successful dribble, and three tackles.

Given his checkered history with Mourinho, his Roma future remains up in the air, but even if Roma leans hard into the youth movement, they'll need a veteran presence like Mkhitaryan. And, as his performance this season proves, he's still got plenty of life left in those legs.

Edin Dzeko

Another veteran finishing the season on a high note, Dzeko was denied by the post yesterday but set up Mkhitaryan's goal with a lovely settle/turn/touch/pass maneuver. Dzeko played the entire match yesterday and ripped off four shots (one on target), chipped in three key passes, won five aerials, completed one successful dribble, and hit on one of two long passes.

These players did some good against Inter but came up just shy of being canonized

Ebrima Darboe: After an impressive run against Crotone last weekend, Darboe showed his youth and inexperience yesterday. He completed 95% of his passes, set up one shot, and completed three dribbles but otherwise looked overmatched by Inter, particularly when he tried to slow down Lukaku and Martinez—though there's certainly no shame in that. Darboe committed one glaring error that led to an Inter shot and was booked after only six minutes.

Bryan Cristante: Three shots, two tackles, and two clearances highlighted his evening but Cristante wasn't able to really get in the flow attack yesterday. And while I can't speak for all Roma fans, I certainly feel better about his place on the club than I did a year ago.

Stephan El Shaarawy: In just 45 minutes, SES was arguably Roma's most dangerous attacker yesterday (five key passes), frequently carving out space down the left flank and nearly had a goal late in the match but was robbed of the opportunity thanks to a last-ditch clearance from Ranocchia.

Lorenzo Pellegrini: The good included four shots and nearly 90% passing while the bad was marred by 1-10 crossing and one pitiful shot attempt in the box off a Dzeko headed pass.

We only have two more S&Ss left this season, so let's hope Roma gives us more reason to smile over the next 10 days.

Taking our ball and going home.

Inter Milan began the evening wearing kits that were entirely inappropriate for the current global mood, but some would say that’s the point. At the other end of the pitch, Roma just wanted to acquit themselves with a decent performance. But conceding an 11th-minute opener to Marcelo Brozovic didn’t help that aim. And then Gianluca Mancini began Inter’s second goal with inventive play that was just as good as Mancini’s final action on the sequence of play was bad.

A great Mancini pass should have found Cristante free in space between the lines, but Cristante wasn’t at the races and it was left to Nicolo Barella—with all the time and space in the world—to launch Inter’s counter. By the time Lukaku laid the ball back to Vecino for 2-0, the little turn and skip in the air from Mancini was just hopeless. But Roma weren’t ready to count themselves out of the game just yet.

Henrikh Mkhitaryan showed good movement around Inter’s box and benefited from excellent Dzeko link-up play between the lines that assisted Mkhi through to putting one past Inter’s Radu. Roma went into half-time pondering if they could get something out of this game, and Fonseca’s second-half substitutions suggested he was convinced they could.

Try as Fonseca might, he sent on El Shaarawy, Villar, and other names to try and match the Inter bodies defending their 2-1 lead through the second half. El Shaarawy had a good performance keeping Roma upfield, and there were beautiful exchanges of play between Ebrima Darboe, Mkhitaryan, and Rick Karsdorp that created a lot of danger but no reward; least of all Inter squeezing their way out of Roma’s vice and scoring the third goal at the death.

The really sad part is Roma’s counter-pressing for Inter’s third goal was one of the few moments in this season that Roma players did everything well enough and, more importantly, did everything together as a team. And yet Achraf Hakimi, Romelu Lukaku and Inter Milan were just better.

Still, at least there was time for Gianluca Mancini to shut down Lautaro Martinez at the San Siro once again. Mancini’s overall performance may have been patchy but he’ll be looking to Lautaro whenever he needs a confidence boost in the Serie A calendar from now on. The glare that substitute Lautaro gave Antonio Conte, as the Inter Milan manager subbed his striker right back off again, said it all.

A late Lukaku goal made the scoreline look worse than it actually was, but Inter showed why their the champs and Roma are stuck in 7th.

At the risk of sounding like a broken record, outside of professional pride, there wasn't much on the line at the San Siro this evening. Inter Milan, the newly minted champions of Serie A, sewed up the title two weeks ago while Roma, now officially out of the Europa League, were merely playing out the string, trying to alternatively impress their new boss, José Mourinho, while hopefully giving their current boss, Paulo Fonseca, some good game tape to add to his resumé.

Really, the only point of intrigue in this match was Inter debuting their fourth kits, which look like they were ripped straight from an Ocean Pacific mail-order catalog from the early 90s. For their part, Roma rocked their maroon home shirts, making for an interesting sartorial matchup.

Like most Roma matches in 2021, it took a good 10 minutes or so for the club to shake off the rust, as the Giallorossi looked uncertain how to approach this match. Was Inter simply going to coast for 90 minutes or would they flex their muscle and bury Roma before the match had a chance to breathe?

One thing is for certain, though. Barring a few exceptions, Inter Milan manager Antonio Conte trotted out quite a few of his regulars, including Romelu Lukau, Lautaro Martinez, and Nicolo Barella, indicating that, no, Inter would not take it easy on Roma this afternoon.

While the Giallorossi looked lively after shaking off the cobwebs, Inter was able to catch them napping in only the 11th minute.

Marcelo Brozovic: 11th Minute (Inter Milan 1, Roma 0)

Roma defended this play well enough until the ball swung out wide to Matteo Darmian, at which point the goal was practically telegraphed. And with a simple diagonal ball pack to the edge of the 18, Darmian did just that, gifting Brozovic with one of the easiest goals you'll ever see. I wouldn't exactly say that Roma's defense was flat-footed, but there was a bit of inevitability to this goal—once it got to Darmian, there wasn't much they could do, and it showed.

Inter would add to their tally nine minutes later...

Matias Vecino: 20th Minute (Inter Milan 2, Roma 0)

This goal was jump-started by an absolutely gorgeous long ball over the top to Romelu Lukaku, who was simply too big and too strong to be bothered by Ebrima Darboe's challenge from behind. After shedding Darboe, Lukaku pulled the ball back and simply waited for Vecino to make his run, setting up the Uruguayan with a gimme goal.

At this point, it really felt like the wheels were going to fall off. Not only did Conte start most of his regulars, but they were also...get this...playing this match like it actually mattered! I know, crazy, right?

Roma reached their nadir in the 29th minute when Davide Santon slipped while attempting to intercept a ball meant for Alexis Sanchez. With Santon on the ground, Sanchez had a clean look at goal until Santon, who by that point had caught up to Sanchez, dragged him down from behind with a classic Roy Williams, Dallas Cowboys-style horsecollar tackle from behind. It's a miracle Santon was only given a yellow because that play was certainly not justifiable as a typical football move.

Roma would fight their way back into this match and pulled a goal back a few minutes later thanks to Henrikh Mkhitaryan.

Henrikh Mkhitaryan: 31st Minute (Inter Milan 2, Roma 1)

In a goal that somewhat mirrored the one Inter just scored, Edin Dzeko did well to settle a ball over the top, before turning and setting up his teammate, finding Mkhitaryan streaking into the box, where he settled home his 11th league goal of the season with ease.

Despite nearly blowing the doors off early in the half, Inter slowed down as the match moved past the half-hour mark, giving Roma just enough room to hope for a second-half turnaround.

Second Half

With a solid end to the first half, Paulo Fonseca seemed to sense an opportunity to draw level, or at the very least give Inter a run for their money in the second half. Accordingly, Fonseca swapped out the ineffective Pedro for Stephan El Shaarawy, who made his long-awaited return from injury this evening in Milan.

Much like the first half, Roma needed eight to 10 minutes to let the game come to them, but as the match crept towards the hour mark, the Giallorossi's attack started to show signs of life. In the 57th minute, Edin Dzeko unfurled a beautiful turn and fire attempt from the edge of the area. From the pass to the first touch to Dzeko's shielding of the ball, Roma played this thing perfectly. Unfortunately, Dzeko's shot clanged off the upper left-hand corner of the goal.

Roma would continue to come at Ionut Radu and the rest of Inter's backline, particularly when the ball found its way to El Shaarawy, who seemed hell-bent on making up for lost time. Shortly after Dzeko's miss, SES played another sensational ball to Dzeko, feeding the Bosnian into the box with a well-placed through ball but Radu came off his line in a flash to snuff out the would-be chance.

Rick Karsdorp, another second-half standout, fired a pinpoint cross into the box in the 62nd minute, only to see his pass turned away at the last moment. Bryan Cristante was the next man up, carving out space for a free header in the 66th minute, but he wasn't able to capitalize on Mkhitaryan's cross, pushing his header wide right.

Two minutes later, it was Lorenzo Pellegrini's turn as the Roma captain fluffed an attempt off an Edin Dzeko headed pass. Despite three quick misses, this was Roma's best sequence of the second half. Their pressing in the attacking third prevented Inter from mounting a counter-attack while their ball movement at the edges of Inter's 18 kept the Nerazzurri on their heels.

Despite controlling the ball and pumping in chances, Roma simply couldn't convert in the box. Whether it was Dzeko striking the woodwork or Pellegrini, Cristante, and El Shaarawy narrowly missing chances, the Giallorossi couldn't quite capitalize on the end-to-end action.

And that was pretty much that; the well quickly ran dry in the dying moments of the match. Outside of Karsdorp whipping a cross into El Shaarawy in the box—one SES would have converted were it not for a last-ditch deflection from Andrea Ranocchia—the final 10 minutes of the match belonged to Inter Milan, who once again caught Roma napping, bagging the third goal in the 90th minute when Hakimi and Lukaku put the finishing touches on a text-book counter-attack.

Final Thoughts

Despite coming up short against a top club again, Roma put forth a tremendous effort tonight, particularly in the second half. With a touch under 50% of the ball and 19 attempts on goal (five more than Inter), we can't exactly say that Roma was run off the pitch but Inter converted their chances, Roma didn't—sometimes it really is as simple as that.

Serie A, Matchday 36

At the beginning of the season, many fans probably thought Roma's Round 36 matchup against Inter Milan would be a pitched battle for one of Italy's final Champions League places. With Juventus dominating the league for the past decade, AC Milan surging during the 2020 restart, Atalanta doing Gasperini things, and Napoli being Napoli, it was logical that Roma and Inter would be two of the five or six teams tussling for a place in the top four.

Of course, the season unfolded just a bit differently. Inter ran away with the title while Atalanta, Napoli, and Milan each surged ahead of Juventus on the table while Roma has slipped all the way to seventh.

As Roma prepare to square off with newly crowned Inter, I picked Alex Donno’s brain about the Nerazzurri and José Mourinho.

It’s been nearly ten years since anyone not named Juventus could call themselves Serie A Champions and over a decade since Inter lifted the Scudetto. That was until last weekend when Inter Milan officially became the 2020-2021 champions under the guidance of Antonio Conte. The last time Inter won the title, its manager was none other than Roma’s next manager: José Mourinho.

So, with Roma traveling to the San Siro to square off against the newly crowned champions, I thought this would be the perfect time to take a deep dive on both the current Inter side under Conte and the last great Inter side under Mourinho.

To talk all things Inter and Mourinho, I brought on Alex Donno, host of Man of the Match on On Side Radio and Five Reasons Sports in Miami, studio host of Inter Miami CF, and the great calcio podcast Calcio Connection.

Tune into this episode to hear Alex weigh in on the following and so much more:

Inter’s strengths and needs to be more competitive in Europe

The sustainability of this project under Conte

The last Scudetto winner under Mourinho

What made Mourinho and his Inter side special?

Comparing and contrasting Conte and Mourinho

The Giallorossi travel to the San Siro with a few players back available.

Roma travels to Scudetto winners Inter just a bit healthier than they were a week ago. Stephan El Shaarawy, Carles Pérez, and Gonzalo Villar return from injury, while Gianluca Mancini is back from suspension. The returns of those four players will give Fonseca some more options in both his starting XI and off the bench. And we will likely see 3-4 changes from the side that hammered Crotone over the weekend at the Olimpico.

Daniel Fuzato should retain his place in Roma’s goal after pitching a shutout on Sunday. In front of him, we’ll likely see a back four lead by Mancini after Fonseca confirmed that moving the Italian into the midfield is an option for the last few matches but won’t happen from the start tomorrow.

“Yes, we’ll have to see what happens over the next few games. It’s true that I want to continue playing with three in that central midfield area. But what I can say is that Mancini won’t play in midfield tomorrow, he’ll be in defence.”

Partnering Mancini in the center of defense will be Max Kumbulla. Flanking them at the full-back positions will be Rick Karsdorp and Bruno Peres. Moving into the midfield, Bryan Cristante and Gonzalo Villar will play in the double pivot. Moving into the attack, Lorenzo Pellegrini will be flanked on the wings by Henrikh Mkhitaryan and Pedro.

At striker, Fonseca will have to choose between Edin Dzeko and Borja Mayoral. Most publications tip the Bosnian but I think it’ll be difficult for Fonseca to bench Mayoral after Sunday’s brace, so I’ll tip the Spaniard.

Wednesday's match is a bit light on storylines, so we reached out to our Inter colleagues to discuss their Championship season, Mourinho memories and more!

Inter Milan has the Scudetto wrapped up and Roma is counting down the days until the José Mourinho era officially begins. We can't lie, there isn't a great sense of urgency ahead of Roma's Matchday 36 trip to the San Siro but that doesn't necessarily mean this match is short on talking points.

To get a better feel for the ins and outs of Inter's title-winning season, we reached out to our colleagues at the Serpents of Madonnina, and David McFarland was kind enough to respond. You can catch the flip side of this conversation at SoM, where I waxed semi poetically about Mourinho's arrival and Fonseca’s departure, among other things.

First off, congrats on the Scudetto and thank you for ending Juve’s decade-long run. It may be too soon to tell, but do you think Inter is primed to take Juve’s place as the league’s dominant force? What has to go right in order for that to happen?

Serpents of Madonnina; Thanks! With the current state of Juve in mind, it might seem like the door is open for an Inter dynasty. It won’t be that easy, however. The Nerazzurri’s financial situation is a mess and the club will need to cut costs over the summer. While the Italian media would like you to believe that means the sale of every major player and Antonio Conte’s exit, in reality, the situation is less dramatic. The departures of veterans on expensive wages (Vidal, Sanchez) along with Inter’s loanees could give Inter breathing space if buyers can be found, but any sort of major signing is probably out of the question. Conte’s contract expires in the summer of 2022 and he’ll certainly want assurances that serious investment will be possible again. For next season, just keeping hold of the starting eleven is enough. At worst, Inter could land in the top four but the goal has to be to defend the title. A second title in a row would go a long way towards solidifying Inter’s spot at the top of the table and proving that this season wasn’t just an exception to the rule.

Since we talked about Mourinho in your Q&A, tell us what memories you have of his time at Inter. What should Roma fans be excited about and what should we worry about with Mourinho as our new manager?

SoM: I confess to not supporting Inter during that incredible treble-winning season, much to my immense regret. In the Inter community in general Mourinho is regarded as a hero. He’s forever a champion in Inter’s history and without him, the Nerazzurri never get anywhere near three trophies in 2010. As for his appointment at Roma, there’s a sense of relief that the Special One isn’t going to a direct rival like Juventus or Milan. For the Interisti that witnessed Mourinho’s best moments at Inter, seeing him in the colors of such fierce opponents as those two would be a tough pill to swallow. That’s not to say he can’t take Roma to the top of Italy, but there isn’t the bad blood between Inter and the Giallorossi compared to Juve and Milan.

If your memories aren’t that fresh, what’s the outsider’s view of this hire? Are you skeptical that The Special One still has it or is this the first step to Roma becoming a threat to the Nerazzurri?

SoM: While a Sarri-like hire is a much safer bet, I think Mourinho is too good an opportunity to pass up. His struggles at Tottenham and Manchester are well-documented but it seems like the Friedkin’s want to make a statement. If given backing in the market, I could see him be a match for Roma. Am I glad it’s not my club where Mourinho is heading? Yes. Do I think this has the potential to be a massive win for both parties? For sure. It might take time, or it might fail miserably, but from an uninvolved perspective, Roma have nothing to lose and perhaps a great deal to gain. I for one will be giving the Eternal City special attention next season.

Aside from Lukaku, who were the key players in Inter’s title run? Were there any surprise performers? Any players who actually underperformed?

SoM: Lukaku has been the kingpin behind the Scudetto, but it’s largely been a team effort. Inter’s ability to keep the opposition off the scoresheet has meant a single goal is enough for the three points, and all but a handful of Inter’s wins throughout the Spring have been by scorelines of 1-0 and 2-1. The center back trio of Bastoni-de Vrij-Skriniar has been vital to the Nerazzurri’s defensive exploits. Marcelo Brozovic is the metronome in the center, while Eriksen and Barella complete the midfield. Hakimi and Perisic provide threats from the wing, but their defensive workload goes understated. Lukaku and Lautaro are on the scoresheet more often than not, but Inter can hurt the opposition in countless ways. It’s been because so many of those players took their game to the next level this season that Inter are the champions and it’s no easy task deciding which names to get on the back of next season’s kits. As for underperforming, only Eriksen was playing below expectations up until January, but he’s since massively improved. In fact, he’s now a locked-in starter and scored the Scudetto clinching goal against Crotone.

With the title already wrapped up, what kind of squad will Conte field on Wednesday? Are there any intriguing young players we might catch a look at this weekend?

SoM: There were six changes from the first-choice XI over the weekend against Sampdoria, so I would expect the other half of the roster to get the starting nod Wednesday. In fact, the Nerazzuri had an inter-squad scrimmage in training last week, and the starters from Saturday were identical to the losing team in the scrimmage. If that was more than just a coincidence, 21-year-old Andrea Pinamonti and 23-year-old keeper Andrei Radu will start against Roma alongside more regular contributors like Lukaku and Barella. Pinamonti and Radu have barely featured over the course of the season but both made promising appearances vs Samp. The complete first-choice XI, however, will be reserved to attempt to heap further misery on Juventus Saturday.

SoM: With Inter playing without any pressure and both teams notching five over the weekend, goals certainly seem on the cards. I’ll go with a 3-2 win for the Nerazzurri in a back-and-forth encounter.
