An unexpected derby win means we’re handing out wings.

As I said in the match preview, the Giallorossi were going to have to find another gear that had eluded them for months if they planned on winning yesterday’s Derby Della Capitale. Surprisingly, they seemed to find that gear with ease, overpowering Lazio and looking like the side Romanisti were hoping they would be at the start of this season.

Of course, there are certain factors at play here, including it being Paulo Fonseca’s last match for Roma at the Stadio Olimpico, that gave this match even more significance to the squad than a typical Derby. Since this tie already carries enough significance to fill the Colosseum, that’s no small feat, and as per usual, a 2-0 win means we’re only handing out sainthoods the day after.

Even if he didn’t add to his record-breaking goal tally for i Lupi, Edin Džeko handed in a man-of-the-match tier performance against Lazio. The Roma legend practically created the Giallorossi’s first goal out of thin air, dribbling between two Biancocelesti players until the pitch was just about to end, then setting up a perfect goalscoring chance for Henrikh Mkhitaryan. I’ve seen Džeko create goals for others, of course; that aspect of his game is often underrated compared to his goalscoring prowess for himself, but it’s certainly there. Nevertheless, I don’t think I’ve seen him assist a goal quite like this before.

Even without that pivotal assist, it was easy to see that Džeko was at the top of his game against Lazio. He showed once again why it’s great to have him be the focal point of your offense, at least when that offense is ticking. There are some rumblings that this may have been Edin Džeko’s last home match at the Stadio Olimpico (although rumors are also hinting that José Mourinho has plans for the Bosnian Bomber). If this was Džeko’s last home match for the Giallorossi, he certainly went out on top.

Ebrima Darboe

While some are suggesting that Edin Džeko’s time in Rome might be drawing to a close, it certainly looks like Ebrima Darboe’s time with the Giallorossi has only just begun. The Gambian teenager played like a man possessed in his first Derby, completing 96% of his passes, three successful tackles, and two dribbles. The name of Darboe’s game so far at the senior level has been calm, never seeming to put a foot wrong on the pitch and providing speed and technique that might start making some of the other young midfielders in Rome worry for their long-term employment here.

After the match, Paulo Fonseca lauded Darboe’s performance in the Derby as well as his overall showing since receiving call-ups to the senior side, saying:

I think we improved (recently) with the arrival of Darboe. He is young, with such courage, always looking forward and he helped the whole team to improve by changing the balance. The system change made a difference, but to be perfectly honest, this young lad made the difference too. It’s rare to find someone so young who is so confident and calm on the ball.

High praise from Roma’s outgoing manager, and if we assume that José Mourinho has been watching the last matches of Roma’s 2020/2021 season, you have to imagine he’s intrigued by the prospect of transforming Darboe into a superstar midfielder. The building blocks are all there.

Honestly, this is the most surprising sainthood I’ve written in a while. No offense to Daniel, but I never would have imagined that he could put in a good performance, let alone a great one, in a match as critical as the Derby Della Capitale. Yet that’s exactly what he did on Saturday, racking up a 7.9 rating on WhoScored after saving four shots and generally frustrating what little offensive juice Lazio could muster against the Giallorossi. It’s impressive for a young goalkeeper to keep a clean sheet in any situation. Keeping a clean sheet against the likes of Ciro Immobile, Luis Alberto, and Sergej Milinkovic-Savic despite very little top-flight experience? In a derby? That’s downright incredible.

I’m not a psychohistorian like Hari Seldon in the Foundation series, and I don’t believe in astrology, so I have absolutely no clue where Fuzato’s story is going in the long term. I always thought his ceiling was most likely solid backup at a club like Roma, but if the Brazilian can put together performances like this on a regular basis, Roma might already have a long-term solution at goalkeeper in-house. Given all of our griping about Pau Lopez and Antonio Mirante in recent seasons, that would certainly be... something.

One more S&S to go. Check back after Spezia for the final player ratings of the season!

All the goals and highlights from Roma's derby win over Lazio, their first over a top seven opponent this season.

This evening’s derby had to be the most meaningless since 2005, back when Lazio finished in 13th and Roma finished 8th place and just one league point above their neighbors. But that didn’t stop the Giallorossi from putting in a very spirited performance, though it took a while for Roma to look like they had the edge in this victory.

Roger Ibañez raised the tension of the match at the wrong end of the pitch, after he put himself under pressure by misscontrolling an easy ball and then simulating contact to try and get out of trouble. The referee didn’t buy it, and the action led to a wide-open Lazio shot on Roma’s goal that Daniel Fuzato charged down and parried away.

If not for some quick thinking from the Brazilian Roma keeper, and some immense defensive contributions from Rick Karsdorp, we may have been singing a very different tune going into half-time.

Instead, the first half was capped by Roma dinking a ball out wide to El Shaarawy, who ran at Lazio before threading a pass through to Dzeko inside the box. The Bosnian bomber then left Acerbi for dead before cutting the ball back into the middle for a completely free Mkhitaryan to tap it into the net and give Roma the 1-0 lead going into the half-time break.

Roma could have doubled their lead earlier in the second 45, but El Shaarawy inexplicably kept his head down and chose to cut back onto his right foot, when a first-time left-foot pass into the box would have found Dzeko free to score. At the other end, another great Fuzato save off an Immobile shot kept Roma’s lead intact.

And then came the icing on the win, as Roma substitute Pedro shrugged off Milinkovic-Savic—who is easily twice Pedro’s size (if not more)—in the middle of the pitch before driving the ball to the edge of Lazio’s area and whipping a left-foot shot past Jose Reina into the far corner for 2-0. There was time for Edin Dzeko to beat Acerbi once again—in a game where Dzeko tried FIVE dribbles in total (where was that all season?)—and get Lazio’s defender sent off in a move remarkably reminiscent of Dzeko’s performance at the Olimpico against Fonseca’s Shakhtar back in 2017.

Be that as it may, Roma sealed a 2-0 derby win for Paulo Fonseca—a result which has no real bearing in the Serie A standings, other than moving Roma four points ahead of Sassuolo (though the Neroverdi have a game in hand) for that Europa Conference League qualification slot. Roma now travels to Spezia for the final matchday next Sunday.

Say it with me: “Where was this all season!?”

They say that records don't matter in the Derby della Capitale, that the pride that comes with besting your bitter city rivals is reward enough. While today's rendition of the Rome derby was slow to start, it didn't take long for the usual tensions to surface. While the season is all but done for both clubs, Roma was looking to avoid getting swept by Lazio for the first time since 2011-2012 while Lazio was clinging to their slim top-four hopes—they entered today's match in sixth place, five points behind fourth-place Juventus, who defeated Inter Milan just prior to kickoff in Rome.

Despite the historical animosity between these two sides, stripped of Serie A spoils and playing in front of an empty Stadio Olimpico, tonight's derby took an agonizingly long time to get going. The opening 20 minutes of this match were as dull as can be, with both sides trying in vain to attack through the middle and finding precious little space elsewhere on the pitch.

It had the feeling of a scoreless snoozer, but you can only keep the Derby della Capitale down for so long. And as the match crept past the 20-minute mark, the capital's two clubs ratcheted up the intensity with Lazio making the first real attacking move of the match in the 19th minute when Lazio, working the ball down the flank, cut the ball inside to Luis Alberto in the middle of the area. Fortunately for Roma, Rick Karsdorp diagnosed the play perfectly and was able to strip Albert of the ball just as he was about to fire at Daniel Fuzato's goal.

Roma was slow to react but found a bit of luck through Edin Dzeko in the middle of the pitch. In the 24th minute, with Dzeko finally getting some space in the middle channels, Francesco Acerbi dragged the big Bosnian down from behind, gifting Roma with a free-kick from 25 to 30 yards out, dead center. Pellegrini's cheeky lob fell flat, however.

Luis Alberto would make his name known a few minutes later during an incredibly strange sequence involving Roger Ibañez, who stuck his leg well into the air while attempting to settle a high bouncing ball. Ibañez did manage to corral the ball but quickly lost possession of it, appearing to be fouled, but the referee decided to let play resume. And in the blink of an eye, the ball was swung back to Alberto in the middle of the box, who had a clear look at goal only to be denied by Daniel Fuzato, who dropped down to block the shot.

Roma continued to pump the ball into Edin Dzeko, with most of the play coming down the left through Stephan El Shaarawy and Bruno Peres. And in the 31st minute, Peres dropped a looping cross into the box for Dzeko, who was pretty well bodied up by the Lazio defense. With his back technically to the ball, Dzeko somehow managed to get his neck/shoulder on the ball, barely pushing it wide of the back post by maybe half a yard.

Lazio would quickly make hay of their own, with Sergej Milinkovic-Savic bursting through the heart of Roma's backline, creating a veritable one-v-one against Fuzato, but for some reason, rather than picking out a low corner, SMS tried to chip Fuzato and the chance went wasted—one of two shots Fuzato turned away in a five-minute span.

And just when it seemed like the first half would end without a bang, Roma opened the scorer's ledger thanks to an impressive play from Edin Dzeko.

Henrikh Mkhitaryan: 42nd Minute (Roma 1, Lazio 0)

After receiving the ball from El Shaarawy down the left, Dzeko cleverly dribbled between two Lazio defenders, shielding them from the ball and recovering it off the end line in the process, before quickly centering the ball to Mkhitaryan, who plucked it out of the air and a rather awkward height, lashing it past Pepe Reina to give Roma the lead.

Second Half

With Bruno Peres picking up a yellow card in the first half, Paulo Fonseca opted to bring on Davide Santon to man the left full-back position in the second half, only to see Santon pick up a yellow within the first minute of the half—sounds about right.

Not content with a one-goal lead, Roma continued to come at Lazio in waves, attacking primarily down the left and through the middle, just as they did in the first half. The Giallorossi's first look of the new half saw El Shaarawy pick out Bryan Cristante right at the penalty spot. However, with zero time to react, Cristante managed little more than a hasty volley attempt that rainbowed over the crossbar.

In the 63rd minute, Cristante played the creator, finding Edin Dzeko at the edge of the area. Dzeko did well to unfurl a left-footed attempt towards the right post but saw the ball skirt just wide of the mark.

With the match winding its way towards the 75-minute mark, Fonseca made a double change, pulling of El Shaarawy and Lorenzo Pellegrini for Pedro and Gonzalo Villar. Not long after this double change, Lazio made their first legitimate surge towards Roma's goal, with Ciro Immobile getting past the defense and attempting to flick the ball past Fuzato at the near post but Fuzato quickly covered the gap and made a save with an outstretched arm.

Cristante and Dzeko would team up again in the 77th minute. With Edin Dzeko driving down the right-hand side of the pitch into the box, he was momentarily dispossessed but managed a panicked pass to Villar, who had trouble settling the ball. The breaks fell Roma's way as the ball fell right into Cristante's lap on the doorstep of the goal but he couldn't react quickly enough and his half-attempt went for naught.

Immobile would test Fuzato again, bursting through Roma's midfield and defense into the penalty area. With Immobile charging down the left-hand side of the box, Fuzato had no choice but to come off his line and did extraordinarily well to stick with Immobile as he attempted to skirt around Fuzato, who managed to deflect Immobile's shot as he was falling to the ground.

With 10 minutes or so remaining, Lazio finally started to show some enthusiasm and killer edge, frequently finding space through Immobile and Luis Alberto, but Roma put an end to the derby thanks to the cagey but inconsistent Pedro.

Pedro: 78th Minute (Roma 2, Lazio 0)

I'm sure I wasn't the only one screaming at Pedro to fire the ball to Karsdorp down the right flank, but Pedro showed incredible gumption to dribble through multiple Lazio defenders before wheeling back to the middle of the pitch and firing a left-footed goal past a hapless Pepe Reina to seal the deal.

The derby became official in the 88th minute when Francesco Acerbi was sent off for accumulated yellows—a fitting end to a frustrating evening for Lazio, who looked a step behind Roma all night long.

Final Thoughts

We have no idea what Fonseca has in store for Spezia next week, but it's a shame this wasn't the season's final fixture because this looked and felt like a proper send-off—the players were as jubilant as we've seen all year once the final whistle blew. By dusting off Lazio 2-0, Roma avoided a derby sweep for the season, notched their first derby victory since 2018, and officially put an end to Lazio's Champions League dreams for next season.

Not too shabby.

Up Next

The final match of the season is set for next Sunday when Roma faces Spezia on the road.

Derby della Capitale!!

We've reached the penultimate round of the 2020-2021 Serie A season and while Roma fell well short of their initial goals this season, none of that matters on derby day. When Roma and Lazio clash, the table is the least of our concerns; the bragging rights from the season's final derby lasts for an entire summer and beyond. In recent seasons, Lazio has held sway in the Eternal City, winning two of the last four Derby della Capitales—Roma hasn't tasted victory in this fixture since a 3-1 win in the fall of 2018.

Paulo Fonseca may be on his way out of town, but delivering his first and only derby victory on the way out the door would be an incredible parting gift for the club and city.

The Giallorossi will stick with the back four in this weekend’s Derby della Capitale.

The Giallorossi continue to grind through the last few meaningless matches of a disappointing season with an injury-depleted roster, something Paulo Fonseca lamented in his prematch press conference.

“It’s been a difficult season, with a few injuries to some important players. As I’ve said a few times, if we had those players available to us throughout the season then I think we would have finished in a different position.”

However, even with nothing left to play for in the standings, whoever Fonseca puts in his starting XI should have some extra motivation this weekend. That’s because Roma hosts Lazio with a chance to have some bragging rights despite finishing below its city rivals for the second consecutive season. Besides that, José Mourinho will also be watching very closely to see which players have the coglioni in big matches.

This will also be a revenge match for the Giallorossi who were thoroughly embarrassed in the reverse fixture. That’s something that Fonseca acknowledged was a tactical mistake and that the team has worked on correcting this time around.

“We have prepared tactically for this game in a different way to the last meeting. In that game we pressed them high up the pitch, but as a result the team was not particularly well balanced. As a result they were able to hit us on the counter-attack with regularity.

“We have prepared for this game looking at ways we can stop them counter-attacking like that. They are dangerous when they go forward with Immobile, Correa, Luis Alberto, Milinkovic-Savic and their full-backs. We need to pay attention to that.”

Part of that tactical change will see Roma stick with the back-four they've utilized in recent weeks. Fonseca acknowledged that he's always had two tactical setups, but that it wouldn’t make sense to revert back to the three-man defense.

“I have always said that we had two setups for this squad. The choice depended a lot on the response of the team, and it depended on the moment we were in as well. We changed it for the match against Manchester United and the team responded well to that. Changes like that can be good for the team too – to give them a different stimulation, to create new dynamics on the pitch. For that reason it doesn’t make sense to change it again right now.”

Reports indicated that Roma trainers were hoping to have Chris Smalling and Leonardo Spinazzola back in the fold for this one, but it doesn’t look like they’ll win the race against time. So, with those two likely out, it should be Gianluca Mancini and Roger Ibañez in the center of defense. They should be flanked by Rick Karsdorp and Bruno Peres. That quartet will play in front of Daniel Fuzato in goal.

In the midfield, we’ll likely see Bryan Cristante paired with Gonzalo Villar in the double pivot. Although there is a slight chance we could see Ebrima Darboe in place of Villar.

Moving into the attack, it’ll be Lorenzo Pellegrini, Stephan El Shaarawy, and Henrikh Mkhitaryan playing in support of the lone striker. Some other publications are currently tipping Edin Dzeko to start, but my gut tells me Fonseca will go with Mayoral after the Bosnian played on Wednesday.

A poor season is one thing, but the Giallorossi have to find the strength to put up a good fight in the Derby.

It’s derby time here at Chiesa di Totti, and although practically everything about this season is already done and dusted, you would be lying if you didn’t admit that even in a wasted season, the Derby Della Capitale still matters. It’s arguably the wildest rivalry in all of European football, regardless of where either club is in the standings. Even in practically empty stadiums, there’s an energy that courses through the city during the lead-up to this match.

Roma vs. Lazio: May 15th. 20:45 CET/2:45 EDT. Stadio Olimpico, Roma.

The biggest question entering this weekend, then, is if the Giallorossi can take the energy that inevitably surrounds the Derby and use it to let this disappointing season end on a positive note.

Last Match

January 15th: Lazio 3, Roma 0

This was just about as painful a derby as I can remember watching recently, and in a way, it was a sign that the Giallorossi were going to flame out as the season continued. A brace from Luis Alberto and a goal from Ciro Immobile gave Le Aquile a comfortable win in January, with a particularly poor performance from Roger Ibanez dooming the Giallorossi to an ignominious defeat against their most important rivals.

Here’s what Bren had to say post-match:

There are ugly matches and then there’s this; mercifully, this match ended without much stoppage time.

Final Thoughts

Do I have to? Can’t I just skip this one? I’ll do twice as many chores tomorrow, I promise! Mom, please!...please!

Honestly, looking back on this highlight video made me cringe. All we can hope for is that Fonseca and the squad don’t embarrass themselves quite like this again this weekend.

What To Watch For

Will Roma Care?

If you haven’t noticed, Roma’s poor form and the guarantee of a Paulo Fonseca departure at the end of this season has made it a bit more challenging for the fans to care much about the remaining matches on the schedule. Rome itself has practically moved on from the season; they’re already making Jose Mourinho beers and ice cream flavors, even before he’s said Forza Roma:

Given that, it’d be somewhat understandable if Paulo Fonseca and the boys weren’t as focused as usual on the upcoming derby. Nevertheless, it’s the Derby Della Capitale: I’ll certainly be watching and hoping for a win, and one has to hope that the true Roman side will find whatever energy they have left in them for this season to give a damn about the most important match left to play.

Sure, it’s hard enough as it is to get fans excited for the Europa League, but since Roma haven’t been nearly good enough to book a ticket back into that competition for next season, we’re now looking at a fight with Sassuolo over who will represent Italy in the first-ever Conference League. I have absolutely no idea what to expect from this competition, but I can only imagine it won’t pay well and won’t do much to expand Roma’s brand. Nevertheless, I’d like to think that the Giallorossi will fight to stay above Sassuolo in the standings; Roma is currently two points ahead of Sassuolo, and a win against Lazio would effectively seal Roma into seventh place.

If Roma needed a reason to win this weekend other than “It’s the derby”, well, that’s basically the closest we’re going to get.
